I'd be very interested to know how your son went from not playing to playing like this in two years. Eric Johnson's string skipping technique is extremely advanced and typically takes years and years of practice to learn how to pull off correctly. Quoting: tyler0xf LOL... Yeah... Right. Some people are born as a natural talent when it comes to dexterity and how quickly they pick up on musical knowledge and ability. Fact is, there is a million people just like the OP's kid. And there are millions of people just like you, who could play for a hundred years every day, and never amount to anything. |

P.S. - With the amount of information available to people nowadays, concerning technique and theory, it's NOT any surprise that people learn to do various things MUCH more quickly and readily than they did in your day, old timer. There's a million people out there who are able to play (in two years) what took Eddie Van Halen 10 years to perfect. And that is a fact... Jack. |

Any way he is great and if he keeps on playing at the rate he is going he could officially become one of the very special guitar gods like Clapton Hendricks Page Vaughn Moorse Van Halen Alman Beck Gilmore and King. |

You have every reason to be proud of him! I really enjoyed it! |

Quoting: tyler0xf Maybe he was using another guitar and 2 years ago finally got his first one or the one he really wanted. Either way at this point it really doesn't matter as he seems to play really well and does a very good job. Id rather have a son who knows how to play an instrument rather than a gamer who eat hot pockets and plays video games all day long in the basement Never played a guitar before the one i got him. Did practice until he bleed. Guns and roses as his first songs. been playing off/on for 25+ years, and this kid is probably better than me : ).....I stopped my finger/speed exercieses fairly early on and settled into strumming chords/melodies mostly... he hit a little clunker or two in there, but we all do that, and all in all it was frigging fantastic....and the more he practices the less of those clunkers there will be....it really was awesome tell him nice job! for the negative-commenting mouth-breathers that are doubting this kid's progress in just 2 years....it's pretty simple 1) kid has a passion for it 2) kid has a natural knack/skill for it due to #1 and #2 above, practicing is not "work" for this kid....it's pure joy....that's how he got so good so fast......when you were playing video games, this kid was on his guitar, when you were looking at porn online, this kid was on his guitar, when you were busy virtue-signaling via some asinine tik-tok video, this kid was on his guitar.....when you were busy gobbling down tide pods, this kid was on his guitar....etc...you get the idea |

I wanted to express the same thing but didn’t want to bash the kid if indeed he did do it. 23 years under the axe here and I’m scratching my head at this one. |

I think it will be a challenge but he's a fast learner and I wouldn't be surprised if he has heard of him. Steve puts a lot of soul into his presentation and you can hear it. Your son will for sure. Fun fact....Steve Vai went without playing guitar (IIRC, it was like 6 weeks or something) and fasted before recording "For the Love of God" and what you hear is a single take after not playing or eating. I'll never forget the first time I heard it after the album just came out...I was blown away. If your kid can play "Cliffs of Dover", he'll be able to handle "For the Love of God". Another great Vai track for him to learn is "Beautiful Surrender". |

If he's been playing for two years, how come this is the only video you posted? Surely you have older ones showing his progression over time...no? How about posting a few of those as well? I too have played for about 40 years, and although I am not saying this is impossible, but this is a tough to believe story and if true...extremely rare. I mean, for all we know you just made it all up and grabbed a video of a kid off of YouTube and are just LARPing. |
