The Guns of August by Barbara W. Tuchman
Anyone under 50 ever read this book we are slipping into war, and they want it. On a side note the car that Archduke Ferdinand was shot in license plate number ends in 1118 same as the date The Great War ended.

Re: The Guns of August by Barbara W. Tuchman
WWI got going for a number of reasons. The ambush of Mr. and Mrs. Franz Ferdinand on June 28 may be cited as the direct reason, and "entangling alliances" may be the reason why everyone felt obligated to dive in, but the natives get restless and have a hankering for a war from time to time.

The whole month of July was spent on bickering and "diplomacy". The candle wasn't officially lit until August. No one envisioned the candle taking off so well; everyone was thinking it'd be short and sweet and the troops would be home by Christmas.
