NYC's Broadway League to keep masks and proof of vax thru April 30, despite Key to NYC ending March 7, 2022
EDIT: This thread is from 2022, but someone requested an update in 2023, so please scroll down to my last post for that.

The mayor of NYC may have dropped the "Key to NYC" proof of vaccination as of today, March 7, but Broadway shows will continue their restrictions.

"The owners and operators of all 41 Broadway theatres in New York City will continue to require vaccinations for audience members, as well as performers, backstage crew, and theatre staff, for all performances through April 30, 2022. Masks will continue to be required for audiences inside the theatre, except while actively eating or drinking in designated locations."

The gold standard of covid health protocols?

From their press release in January announcing the restrictions: "Charlotte St. Martin, President of The Broadway League said, 'We’re proud to continue setting the gold standard of covid health protocols in all our Broadway theatres in New York... Come join us!'"

Don't be fooled by the March 7 date. This is not over.

UPDATE 3/8/22

As I've mentioned, my unvaxxed daughter is going for a high school trip in April, which includes a Broadway show. We have used religious exemption all her life; no vaxxes ever.

If you read closely, the theaters do allow religious exemption.

Today I spoke with someone at the theater in question. What do we need to show as proof of religious exemption? Nothing. Wait... what?

Here is what she needs:

1. A negative covid test (PCR within 72 hours -or- blood antigen test within 6 hours of show time). We will buy a couple over-the-counter antigen tests, supply our own needle (diabetes in the household), and that's that. No PCR! (Have to get the brand of test that links to an app, to prove date and time. Fine. No problem.)

2. ID. Easy enough.

3. Mask. Fine, whatever. (Unless eating or drinking, of course.) It's better than not going at all.

I know, I know... I'd love to boycott NYC, don't feed the beast! But it's a big school trip, and I totally get that. We are doing what we can to make it smooth for her and her friends. We could make her stay home, and the only one who suffers is her.

I'll post any updates or further info as I get it, if anyone is interested.

Thank you so much for posting this!! We are in the same situation (my daughter's high school orchestra is going to Carnegie Hall this coming weekend as well). We were also signed up and waiting for them to change their minds and it just hasn't quite gotten there yet. This gives me so much hope! I've emailed them (earlier today) inquiring about the religious exemption but was stressed that it might be a long drawn-out process for an automatic 'no'. At least this brought down my level of stress somewhat. Thank you so much!

It's been a year, but I'm happy to report what happened.

For the Broadway show:

We purchased the Binax test ($12) which lets you scan your result and then sends you an email to show on her phone at the Broadway door.

We did the test in our hotel room (near the theater) a few hours before, by blowing into a tissue and then swabbing that. (Not sticking that swab in my kid's nose!) Test was negative, of course.

While the kids went to dinner, hubby and I headed to the theater to proactively meet the "covid police" at the door, to let them know she was coming and what we were told to do. We did not need to do this, but we are vigilant parents and didn't want her to face any trouble alone. She was the only one in her large group not vaxxed.

The covid police guy just laughed and said, "No problem!" He was very nice and chipper about it. When the group arrived, we pointed out what she was wearing, and she waved to us. The covid police guy smiled and said again, "Got it. No problem!"

She came through the line with her group. Each kid showed their phone with their proof of vax, then received an arm band. She showed her phone with her Binax email, quietly said "religious exemption," then received her armband.

Anyone looking on would not have known the difference.

She smiled (through her "fake" mask) at us, waved, and went in with her friends.

Simple as that.

----------

As for Carnegie Hall... For several months and up until the last few days prior, I tried everything (called my congressman, mayor of NYC, governor's office of NY and of my state, even reached out to an old high school friend who is an attorney in the city, sent emails and calls to various people at Carnegie Hall) – they would not budge.

I even showed her blood test showing covid antibodies, with the footnote from the large chain pharmacy that said this is better than the vax – which yes, we knew back then, but Carnegie's doctors apparently didn't agree.

And the people in charge at Carnegie were quite rude about this.

As for religious exemption, they said they could transfer our tickets to some future event. First off, we didn't buy any tickets until we knew we could get in, so that didn't apply. Second, why do we want to come to something later when our kid is supposed to perform now?

She was not allowed to perform, and she (and we her parents) was not allowed to sit in the audience either.

They would not budge, and they became quite rude in their final emails to me.

So on Carnegie day (rehearsals and performance), we took her to get lobster rolls from the Soup Nazi, went to the gift shops at Guggenheim and MOMA (our favorite stores), rode the subway to a thrift store she wanted to go to, and enjoyed amazing acoustics of the subway where a small group of street musicians was performing.

We had a grand time.

Then we got mochas and sat on the steps across the street from Carnegie so she could jump on the buses when her friends came out of the performance. They were quite jealous to see her bags of souvenirs.

Was I a little sad? Not going to lie: yes. But we made the most of it.

A year later, she has no regrets, and we just laugh about the drama and the stupidity.
