WTF : U.S. Officials Repeatedly Urged China to Help Avert War in Ukraine, Shared Intel With China Who Then Shared it With Russia

The previously unreported talks between American and Chinese officials show how the Biden administration tried to use intelligence findings and diplomacy to persuade a superpower it views as a growing adversary to stop the invasion of Ukraine, and how that nation, led by President Xi Jinping, persistently sided with Russia even as the evidence of Moscow’s plans for a military offensive grew over the winter.


In recent weeks, the two nations negotiated a 30-year contract for Russia to supply gas to China through a new pipeline. They blocked a demand from Washington that the United Nations impose additional sanctions on North Korea for new missile tests, even though the two nations had agreed to similar sanctions before. And Russia moved large numbers of troops from Siberia to its west, a sign that Moscow, in preparing for a potential invasion of Ukraine, trusts China along their shared border in the east.

Their long courtship reached a peak with the 5,000-word joint statement that said their partnership had “no limits,” which some Biden administration officials see as a turning point in China-Russia relations and a brazen challenge to American and European power. The statement was the first in which China explicitly joined Russia in opposing any further expansion of NATO, and the two countries denounced Washington’s Indo-Pacific strategy and its new security partnership, AUKUS, which includes Britain and Australia. The nations also described Taiwan as “an inalienable part of China.”

China and Russia declared that they would work with other countries to “promote genuine democracy” and counter American-led ideology and institutions — building a new world order in which autocracies are unchallenged, U.S. and European officials say.

Zelensky delivers address in Russian, calling for peace

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke directly to the people of Russia on Wednesday night, saying they have been told by Russian President Vladimir Putin that he has a "plan to free the people of Ukraine, but the Ukrainian people are free."

Zelensky delivered his taped appeal in Russian, stating that the images and information being shared by Russian leaders and state media isn't telling the actual story of what is happening in Ukraine. "They say that Ukraine may pose a threat to Russia," Zelensky said. "This wasn't a case in the past, nor is it now, and won't be in the future. Our main goal is to maintain peace in Ukraine and keep Ukrainian citizens safe." He said Russian television "will certainly not show this video, but the Russian people must watch it. The truth must be known."

Putin has said he sent troops to eastern Ukraine on Monday for a "peacekeeping" mission. A Kremlin spokesperson on Wednesday said separatist forces have asked Russia for help "in repelling the aggression of the armed forces and formations of Ukraine," and this could be the pretext Putin needs to start a full-scale invasion of the country, Western officials warn. There are about 200,000 Russian troops stationed near the Ukraine border, and a Pentagon official on Wednesday said nearly all of the forces are in their final position for combat.

Volodymyr Zelensky called on Russian President Vladimir Putin “to sit down at the negotiating table to stop the death of people,” the Ukrainian President said in a video message early on Friday.

Meanwhile, Russian troops are reportedly advancing to Kyiv, and there have been numerous reports of airstrikes on the Ukrainian capital and other cities overnight.

“Today at 10:30 am at the entrances to Chernihiv, Hostomel and Melitopol there were heavy fighting. People died,” Zelensky said on Twitter early on Friday.

Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said, as carried by ABC News:

“We are ready for negotiations, at any moment, as soon as the Armed Forces of Ukraine respond to the call of our president to cease resistance and lay down their arms. No one intends to attack them.”

Lavrov was speaking during a televised meeting in Moscow with pro-Russian separatist leaders from eastern Ukraine.

Russia attacked Ukraine early on Thursday, confirming the worst-case scenarios of the U.S., which had been warning for weeks that an invasion was imminent.

I don't know what was so secret about this offensive, that the Chinese government with satellites and billions in military investment could not know. All of us at GLP knew everything months in advance. Some here even already anticipated this in 2014.
