Besides what you say, a big part of what happened in Ukraine was Donetsk voting to join Russia, and Russia accepting. This gave Russia legal jurisdiction to come in and help this area. Since Ukrainian forces have been terrorizing the peoples of Donetsk for years, with Russia only giving materials supplies to the resistance. Donetsk voting to join Russia was a big turning point (which is what Crimea did a few years back).

Now to be truthful, after helping Donetsk, Russia did invade other parts of Ukraine, but that the fighting already started by then and Russia had to complete its military objectives (that I’m sure they had been planning for, for awhile).
