RED ALERT - Storm Eunice: Rare red weather warning issued for parts of the UK

A rare red weather warning - the highest level - has been issued for parts of south-west England and south Wales on Friday, meaning there is a danger to life from flying debris.
The Met Office warned Storm Eunice could bring gusts of up to 90mph, causing significant disruption.
Damage to homes, cancelled trains and power cuts are also likely. Many schools are closing as a precaution.
The red warning is in place from 07:00 GMT until 12:00 GMT on Friday.

Going to get about 1 to 3 inches of snow where I'm at in Ireland.

Hope it's good and wet so I can build a snowman since the moment the wind blows the power will be out for hours and hours.

Some snow would be nice we in the SW bit as usual it will be horizontal rain.

I must admit, living on the North Devon coast, I am somewhat worried about this one. High spring tide in the morning coincides with the worst of the wind and a storm surge is expected in the Bristol Channel.

For some reason I am thinking about that large pier in Weston which was rebuilt after the old one caught fire. It is located right smack bang where this storm is due to hit and is very vulnerable. Wonder if they have it insured?

Have spoken to my mate Josh who works in the emergency planning department with the council.

Josh says other than the South West taking a mild hit by Friday afternoon it'll be not much to shout about especially in the South East and Central UK.

He has said they aren't taking any additional measures. To be fair Josh has called these weater events correct in the past so I have no reason to doubt him.

What is Explosive Cyclogenesis - or 'weather bomb'?

A 'weather bomb' is jargon (often used in the US) for Explosive Cyclogenesis.

It's when a low pressure system/storm forms rapidly - and this is how Storm Eunice is developing.

The storm has unusually formed over warmer waters of the Azores and is taking a particularly rapid track to the UK via the Jet Stream.

With no time to release its energy before reaching us, it'll bring winds near 90mph as it reaches our shores and makes landfall - bringing widespread and dangerously strong winds, big battering waves and a storm surge in some coastal areas of the west.

Direct hit expected on NL as well.

Basically, we are probably witnessing explosive cyclogenesis.

The surface pressure will have fallen by 31 millibars in the preceeding 24 hours prior to 3 pm tomorrow CET time.

An explosive cyclogenesis is defined as a drop in surface pressure of 24 millibars per day.

Yikes.

I live in a skyscraper, was a roaring plane landing type of noise last night. Never heard such before, been here 10 years.

Just been checking and comparing the projected strengths and pressures of this incoming storm and it appears that it will roughly equal storm Lothar when it hit Germany on 26/27 th December 1999. That storm was the costliest windstorm ever recorded with damage costs rising to a massive 15 billion euros across Europe!
