It's a long shot, but what if there is more too it than just bringing Ukraine back into the fold. Ukraine is strategically important to Russia of course and maybe that's all it is. They are doing it at a time when they will get no resistance from the US. They may also open the door for the Chinese to hit Taiwan. However, the son and "the big guy" may have serious problems if the Russians uncover damning proof of misdeeds by the crack smoker and his daddy. It might reveal the biggest corruption case ever. The MSM would never report it, unless they are forced to through their own participation in any crime. Just a thought...
