Colombian renewable energy start-up E-Dina has developed a cordless light that converts salt water into electricity as a more reliable alternative to solar lamps in off-grid communities.

The portable device, called WaterLight, needs to be filled with 500 millilitres of seawater – or urine in emergency situations – to emit up to 45 days of light.

Acting as a mini power generator, the device can also be used to charge a mobile phone or another small device via its integrated USB port.

Created in collaboration with the Colombian division of creative agency Wunderman Thompson, the project was designed as a stand-in for solar energy, which is often used to supply remote locations but which is weather-dependant.

"WaterLight can be more efficient than solar energy lanterns because it regenerates instantly," said Pipe Ruiz Pineda, executive creative director of Wunderman Thompson Colombia.

"Once filled with water, the energy delivery is immediate while solar lanterns need to transform solar energy to alternative energy to charge batteries and they only work if there is sun."

These are great, but Crisco hasn't been in a real can for some time. It comes in cardboard. It wouldn't be safe to use. Idk if any other brand still comes in an actual can.

- TIME: It takes about and hour to make a noticeable difference on overall room temperature. But sitting next to it makes a huge difference. e.g. if you're working at your desk, sit it next to you

- MODIFICATIONS: The version shown in the video doesn't have any holes in the the top for the warm air to escape like many others on shown Youtube do. I have tried both configurations and my conclusion is that both options work well, but have slightly different applications
-- No holes version gets hotter and therefore is better if you are sitting next to it as you get more radiant heat
-- With holes version lets some of the hot air escape out the top and therefore fills the room with hot air, and is thus better for heating a larger area.

The second video is where Crisco is put into glass jars with the candle pushed down into them. We found some cans at Walmart awhile back and have that in our emergency supplies.

I put some time and effort into the cardboard stuffed cans covered in melted wax.

They're pretty cool too but probably not good in an enclosed area.

It is a great survival tip, a homemade heater, maybe you aluminum can heater is not working or you aluminum can heater is not working, that is when you build you brick air heater, a great option of emergency heat for indoor use !

Using a emergency heat for indoor use may be a great option for you when shtf, it is smart to have many indoor heat options, when you have a power outage at home it is scary, and it is not fun to loose power. when you loose power or have a winter storm and are in need of emergency heat due to a power outage.... think about using a brick air heater.... Emergency heat for indoors like a brick air heater is a much better option than freezing to death.

hmmm? One can wrap foil around the cardboard container if worried or put them into a ceramic flower pot or in a glass pyrex dish.

In the event of a collapse of the electrical system, the best heating system apart from a wood stove is the kerosene wick heater.
They can put around 3KW continuously. They are very cheap and durable.
They can work perfectly with JET-A1 type aviation kerosene, which can be obtained very cheaply and can be stored for years in plastic canisters.

You mentioned it will heat a small room...

How small??? Like a closet or less than 100 Sq feet...

What about carbon monoxide? I'm sure it's safer than using hurricane lamps and lamp oil...

I have experimented by using 9 hurricane lamps in a 100 sq foot room. Brought the ambient temperature up by 40+ degrees. Problem is, it produces a lot of carbon monoxide and takes out the air in the room...

Any combustion heater without a chimney will use oxygen and generate CO2 and water.
If the environment is not ventilated with the increase in CO2, combustion will be more inefficient and will begin to generate CO (carbon monoxide), which is extremely toxic and imperceptible.
The use of a CO sensor is mandatory for any heating without a chimney.
Another problem is the accumulation of condensed water product of combustion on the cold walls, causing the black fungus so annoying and difficult to eradicate.

I've bought a few rolls of hurricane lamp wicks. I'm sure they could be used as wicks for the Crisco and glass mason jars...

5 (More) Easy DIY Candle Ideas To Try If The Lights Go Out

The power could go out at any time, especially during cooler months when winter storms can knock out power lines. If the power does go out, and you realize you have no candles, here are 5 do-it-yourself ways to get some light in your home.

*Candle Safety: Never leave a burning candle unattended. Never burn a candle on or near anything that might catch on fire. Keep candles out of the reach of children and pets. Never put a candle where a kid or pet could knock it over. Take care when extinguishing candles. The jars or containers are likely to be very hot and can burn you.

Now that we have safety out of the way, here are a few simple ways to create some light.

1. Use Bacon Grease – If you store all of your excess bacon grease, use it as a candle. This grease makes the perfect improvised survival candle. Put some bacon grease in a natural fiber wick and light that wick. It’ll burn as long as any comparably-sized candle. If the electricity does go out, then the bacon in the fridge is going to go bad anyway. If you don’t plan to cook it, you can use it as a candle. Tear off the fatty pieces and press them in a jar around a natural fiber wick, and this will burn like a candle as well. The fatty bacon pieces will melt just like a wax and it will smell like bacon. TIP: Smear the wick with bacon fat first!

2. Use Crisco – This won’t smell as good as the bacon; however, it can be used to make a candle in a pinch. Press a natural fiber wick ( you can improvise this too by using something like a cotton t-shirt shred or a mop strand) and shove it in a tub of Crisco using a forked stick. This is one of the longest burning emergency candles on the planet. Smear the top of the wick with Crisco to get it to burn better. When the tubs of Crisco go on sale, especially if you don’t cook with it, they may be good to stock up on and use as a long burning candle.

Crisco burns really clean! But it melts too easily and the candle tips over and goes out in the liquid crisco.

You need a short 3 inch wide candle so it can't tip over.

I don't think a candle is going to do much when it's below freezing outside. Even a 1500 watt space heater struggles.

Have accumulated about 6 months worth of food

after that, we have chickens, and rabbits

Planted fruit trees, berry bushes, and stored a crapload of veggie seeds.

Firearms - Covered - I'll leave it at that - plenty of ammo for each caliber.

2 Liter Water Filter from Natural Items



Vidya: I downloaded this before watching it. After a few minutes I was thinking it was a classic example / proof of my notion that Youtube only serves to dumb us down...

But on further watching, this is so bad, in a good way, it's hilarious. If this was a parody comedy sketch it would have everyone on the floor.. i laughed .. brilliant.. seriously, you couldn't parody this guy any better than this.

I loved how he manhandled his ridiculous sized knife in his gun holster.. and the comedy.. so deadpan..truly brilliant..

(lets skip over the fact that the guy was for real and go with the comedic version).. his filter works. You could reduce the 20 minute video to 2-3 minutes, (but miss all the fun)..

To filter any water... into a 2 litre bottle, inverted, with bottom cut off, place a large stone to block the bottle nozzle, then add equal parts, first (bottom layer) charcoal, then sand, then grass, then pebbles/ stones (top layer). It will need to 'bed' in, so need to pass several litres of water through the filter before the it works optimally. The water isn't purified so boil, or treat the filtration.

Did you know.. sphagnum moss could be used to replace all of those layers. Same process, just fill the bottle completely with sphagnum moss. Works a treat, if it's available. (they used sphagnum in the war as a wound dressing).

You would have to modify this system for use as a grey water filter. For grey-water, there is no need for the charcoal.. so sand is the bottom later, then grass, then pebbles.. and then for a household system another layer of straw is needed to act as a grease trap. This top grass layer will need to be changed regularly.. can be composted..If you don't use this sacrificial level then the grease /fats will clog the pebbles and the water wont be able to pass.. the filter will flood.
