James Lee “Jim” Townsend, 86, Warsaw, passed away Jan. 29, 2022, at Parkview Whitley Hospital, Columbia City. Born March 11, 1935, in Muncie, Jim was the son of the late James Henry and Jessie Ruth (Peasley) Townsend.

While attending Muncie Central High School, Jim was a member of the swim team. After graduating in 1953, Jim married Margaret Suzanne “Suzy” Dome on May 22, 1954. Together they had five children, Daniel, Frances, Diane, Cindy, and Jonathan Townsend. Later in life Jim graduated from Manchester College with a degree in sociology.

Jim began his professional career in the tool and die industry, working for a few companies before settling in with Dana Weatherhead Corp, Columbia City, for twenty-five years. He also had an entrepreneurial spirit. In the 1960s Jim started two motorcycle shops, and in 1973 he founded James Townsend & Son, Inc, which makes reproduction 18th and 19th century clothing and personal accessories.

James "Jim" Townsend of Jas. Townsend & Son which is now known as Townsends' has passed away. Mr. Townsend passed away over the weekend from complications from a heart attack. His son John runs Townsends, and we are all familiar with Jim's son, John, from the cooking videos that he has produced in the past few years. Jas. Townsend & Son was born in 1973 (didn't yet have that name) when Jim started making candle lanterns, and it grew into the large mail-order sutlery, and later online sutler and YouTube channel today known as Townsends. I am sorry for the loss of one of the foundational fellows of our current hobby. Glad for the fact he saw his concern grow into the internationally known and well liked firm that it is today.

Townsends

·
It is with deep regret that we inform you that James Townsend has passed away over the weekend after complications from a heart attack. Many of you were friends with Jim. He started selling candle lanterns to the historical reenacting community in 1973, which turned into a catalog mail order company that was run out of his garage, and eventually turned into the Jas. Townsend and Son that you know today. For almost fifty years he enjoyed, encouraged, and supported the historical reenacting community. He will be missed.

I bet the plump cook/bartender will be the next to croak unless he lessens his girth. James has a good channel and it's a pleasure to see how our forefathers eaked out a living in a new born country.

Keep up the good work, James. Sorry for your loss.
