Thrifty is a way of life when you want to live simply, or on a fixed income.
 Quoting: Tiger One

Absolutely right tiger. Most people are frivolous while few are frugal with they're spending habits. Consumerism vs. Conservancy. Materialist vs. Minimalist. Some of us are just happy with very little. And we get excited over simple things in life that others don't even notice.

Re: DO YOU EVEN THRIFTY?
1. When the Dawn Dishwashing Liquid is half full, I add water and shake it up. It's so concentrated, that a little goes a long way.

2. When the detergent bottle is empty, I add water and shake it up. Still lots of suds for the washing machine.

3. I agree with a previous poster that a lot of the coupons are for brand name items that are already more expensive than buying off-brand. So, you have to be careful with that one.

4. For home decorations, I shop in antique stores and vintage flea markets. The other night, I found a Waterford Lead Crystal Cross (regular 155.00) for $20.00. I'm pretty good at identifying nice crystal pieces; and obviously, someone who owned the booth didn't know what they had. Another time, I found a Tiffany Crystal Votive for $10.00. Tiffany was etched on the bottom of the votive.

5. Sometimes, during the Spring & Summer, I grow my own herbs such as Basil, Spearmint, Peppermint, Thyme, etc. Great for salads, pestos and teas.

6. If we eat at Chick-Fil-A and have extra dressing or sauces, I'll bring them home and put them in the refrigerator to use for salads. My grandmother used to save the small Country Crock butters in restaurants and put them in her purse. LOL My husband saves the napkins from any drive-thru and keeps them in the Jeep for further use.

7. At times, I'll buy the old bananas that are marked .50 or less and bring them home.

8. When I lived in Florida, one time I found a pair of $300 shoes for $2.99 in a Goodwill. Would also find high-end clothing for next to nothing. The thrift stores in Florida had some really nice stuff.

Thrrrrifty is Scottish. (You have to roll the R's)

J speak is:
such-a-deal
wholesale
I-have-a-friend/relative

So to tell, look up your R's. Up your R's!

Re: DO YOU EVEN THRIFTY?
I thought I was thrifty, but based on this poll I guess not.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 81832570

Secret for you...OP is not thrifty either if he is eating out a lot and going to hotels. A really thrifty person doesn't eat out, instead cooks and uses store brand condiments. They find a campground and camp in a tent, or plan their trips so that every night they are staying with a different relative or friend. Just saying - I grew up with really thrifty parents. You learn the real tricks. My mother shopped at garage sales for Christmas presents. She rinsed and reused her coffee filters. The parents didn't run HVAC into the upstairs, so we literally slept in rooms that were sometimes below freezing. And you put the water in the soap well before it is empty. LOL!
 Quoting: GA Girl

You had an "Upstairs"? wow. My mama would reuse her coffee grounds. She bought "powdered" milk because it used to be cheaper. gag. Pop fixed my sisters broken glasses with acetone. Nothing but run down bikes. maybe one cheap present for Christmas. She made biscuits every day.

I save the Talenti containers and fill them with bird seed to fill the feeders.
 Quoting: Agent 99

Lol, Talenti is like $6 a pint!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 72475792

I just scored 3 pints for $2.99. Talkin' about thrifty.

Re: DO YOU EVEN THRIFTY?
Justified buying Talenti as I loved the containers for leftovers. .. until the price went way over $4.

Found a similar tasty brand for $3.50.

Beginning to wonder if it's economical to make my own.

Yeah, we never eat out. You can buy 4 times the amount of the same food at grocery stores and make it at home.
And you won't get sick.

Thrifty David Horrowitz taught us that.

I don't buy coffee filters, I use a mesh strainer that sits on the mug.

And just cause something comes in a bigger size or in bulk, does not mean it's a better deal.
 Quoting: Half Past Midnight

I used one of those for awhile, I think I have 2 or 3 of them still around for emergency use, but I worried that washing the remnants of the coffee grounds off daily probably wasn't good long-term for the septic tank. Now I'm back to the unbleached filters.

I don't keep up with trends, or feel the need to get the latest and greatest phone, or car. People who are really into consumerism end up being in deep debt, and become slaves to their bills ! I am debt free, just the normal everyday bills that have to be paid, like utilities, insurance, and buying groceries.

The Goodwill by us sells items by the pound,$1.39 a pound now, as they raised the price per pound 20 cents. The furniture is marked from $2 to $20. I got a solid wood table for my breakfast room for $5. I got a pair of gorgeous Queen Anne style end tables in perfect condition for $6. Most of my furniture is from that Goodwill store, and you would never know it. It is all expensive stuff in excellent condition, that is out of my budget, for sure, if I didn't get lucky at that store !

Re: DO YOU EVEN THRIFTY?
I am very thrifty but no of those things are part of my lifestyle. Now if you asked what we do with the wood ash from our wood stove, or how we recycled our own egg shells and coffee grinds I could answer.

Not sure the last time I had a cheese packet from take out, but we take home and use the extra napkins from our family owned Italian restaurant that we frequent.

Using the toilet paper from a k of c sounds as unhealthy as eating the food from there. Gross.
 Quoting: kat

When I was a kid, mom worked as a fry cook at a restaurant. They dumped their coffee grounds in an empty lot. That area produced the best fishing worms for my buddy to use. Never a shortage. Is there a connection or just a coincidence?
 Quoting: rccola

Coffee grounds are excellent compost. It's interesting you mention worms. I dump my coffee grounds directly into my flower gardens all year round. I have an abundance of earth worms there.
No good deed goes unpunished.
