Back around 85 and definitely '86-87, metal bands' sounds became ruined by the shitty, synthy, guitar-tamed Production of the Time.

Think ZZ Top. Eliminator..BAD ASS guitar and tone. By '87 and Afterburner, you had crap like "Stages" and "Rough Boy."

Sleeping Bag remains a guilty pleasure of mine, tho.

1983 and 1984 put out the best-sounding, most classic metal albums of the 80s. The WASP debut in '84, Piece of Mind, Hy Diver, etc.

A lot of people think Theatre of Pain sucks. But I always dug it. Girls Girls Girls is unlistenable to me because of the '87 Production. Theatre was raw and druggy, with that nasty muddy-brown guitar tone of Mick Mars and the howls and inflections of a young Vince.

Master of Puppets was amazing when it came out. But today, And Justice for All is a more interesting listen than MOP.

And I sure don't remember anyone making a Stink about the Bass back in '89. It has w crunchy guitar sound.

Paul Stanley sang a total of like 130 KISS songs and Gene sang like 100 or 110. Of course give a few to Ace and Peter, too.

If would have sounded better if it was recorded for Diary or Blizzard of Oz. Good tune tho. I think Killer of Giants isn't all that.

Good ear OP... Nothing like "tone".
However, I would take 80's bad production any day over whats being produced today.

As a drummer and as much as I love Holy Diver and Vinny Appice, I wish the drum "tone" back then was more of what you hear today. I myself was into the single head " blue Evens" drum head sound ( thump ) back in the 80's but so much better sound out of todays thin maple shell drums and thin drum heads and drum mounts...

If you could ever find it, get the vinyl version of Ozzy speak of the devil. The guitar tone from Brad Gillis is insane. The CD didn't capture it.

The Zakk Wylde albums sound good to me. Much better than Bark at the Moon and Ultimate Sin, but ultimately it’s a matter of taste, so who cares. Might as well argue about your favorite foods.
