Sorry to hear that OP. My mom broke her hip last year, aged 86. Barely survived the surgery and meds they have her, as one of the pain meds she had she had an allergic reaction to. It is a very tough recovery road. My prayers are with Mom and your family as you navigate her recovery. As for my Mom, she is pretty stubborn and her will to live and keep living has been what has amazed me as she slowly recovers. If your Mom survives the surgery and all, the outcome will probably rest on her shoulders and will to live on or pass away.

She’s 85? She’s a fighter, she’ll be fine. There are no wimps that make it to 85.

Hopefully a specialist in neurology scanned her brain. Sounds like she may have suffered a TIA or some form of stroke/clot.

In the hospital, rehab, and nursing home environments, falls are the absolute worst thing that can happen to the elderly.

I have heard that the actual fall comes from the breaking of the hip, the hip doesn't actually break in the fall. Not sure if that's true in every case but I have heard that osteoporosis can cause a weakening of the hip to the point where it cracks under the normal weight of walking around, and then you hit the floor.

This happened to my great grandmother about the same age, I remember going to visit her in the convalescent hospital. Eventually she will heal, but not sure how much mobility she will have.

Her recovery will largely depend on how willing she is to endure the PT...I had a neighbor about that age break his, and he was up and walking the next day with a walker. My MiL, late 80s, broke hers and refused to put in the effort in PT, within a few months she needed help getting on the toilet and now she needs help getting in and out of bed, into her chair, only thing she can do by herself is eat and use the phone and TV remote.
