Anyone who's been on the cruise ship should be painfully aware how expensive and dreadfully slow satellite internet connection is.

This is why ham radio operators are still essential. Since they are radio, they don't need cable. As long as they have power: battery, solar or power plant, and good atmospherics, they can talk to any place in the world that has a receiver.

I worked briefly with the man who designed the first low power, low noise, transistor amplifier thus making the submarine microphone net across the Atlantic possible. And speaking of piracy, the bugger patented UHF oscillator technology I developed at a previous employer after he left Bell labs. Now that's a bit of history: cable vs radio satellite uplink...
