Covid encephalopathy
well, my dad got admitted to the hospital yesterday evening for encephalopathy of the brain. He was having issues, mind you they were slight at the time, but progressing issues to where we have reached the point of his brain swelling now. And they are trying to tell me that he contracted Covid little over 10 days ago even though all these neurological symptoms were happening way before Covid happened, and they’re trying to put it on Covid and this nurse isn’t having it. So I need lots of prayers for when I go into this hospital today that I keep my cool; always show them the best me; and I get to the bottom of this mess. And of course, my dad to completely recover is the main goal.

If he stays on the course he has been on, there’s a good chance he will die 365 days after my mom and I mean to the day. I am totally feeling like I’m not even in my body right now.

I need prayers and strength

My dad is very close to his maker so, thank God I don’t have to worry about his soul.

Re: Covid encephalopathy
I am a Hospitalist.

Those are always difficult to sort through because people over 70 have a number of reasons to develop neurologic issues. A couple of things that might be helpful.

First is it could be both. Some antecedent neurological problem and then Covid on top of that. I have that found checking a prolactin level can help as this is often elevated in Covid encephalopathy. We have found good results from intervenous thiamine anywhere from 100 to 500 mg three times a day. Nurses or more comfortable with the lower doses.

Check a d-dimer as possible sub-dural venous sinus can clot easily in Covid. And also a B12 level is useful because if this is low in people over 70 it can be the cause of dementia and dementia like symptoms.

I’m not trying to offer any treatments or medical advice but only throwing out our experience in the hope that may be something in there could be helpful for your father after reviewed by that your medical team.

I’m getting really tired of people who don’t have a damn clue dispensing medical advice.

FFS. LOOK IT UP!

ANY VIRAL INFECTION CAN CAUSE THIS AS WELL AS MYOCARDITIS AND PERICARDITIS.

OP: I used to take L-Ornithine to prevent encephalopathy. Look it up! Encephalopathy has often to do with a poor liver. The brain-liver connection is very real. When you detox the liver, the brain soon follows. It cleared up my severe memory impairment issues. Alzheimer patients also could benefit from checking the liver first. Without a working liver, the brain can't function. Hope this helps you help your dad, somehow.

Re: Covid encephalopathy
so sad reading this, Ohio chic.

guess he is gettting dexamethasone or something similar to reduce the brain swelling.

my dad had an impressive mediastinal shift - their words, not mine - from a brain bleed secondary to coumadin therapy and a small bump on his head.

surgery removed the blood and the bleed stopped or slowed - he came home and died a few days later. Kidney failure had set in, they had started dialysis in the hospital.

when he was taken from my mother's house for his first dialysis session as an outpatient,

the very kindly dialysis tech or doc called me. My mom probably told them to talk to me.

he said, your father is actively dying.

if we hook him up, he will die.

if we don't dialyze him, he will die.

in all of the mess, these were the first honest and helpful words. I found a nursing home near my mom where he could stay and I stayed too, until he died.

My father was not suffering. He had a period of intense confusion, but no pain.

If it is your father's time, may he pass in his sleep too. May people speak honestly and kindly to you.

you are in my prayers.
