The West German parliament passed front override side and rear underride protection in 1972. Europe followed within the year. The USA got the ICC or Mansfield bar in 1973. For the first ten years of those Mansfield bars the people who buy trailers didn't want to pay any more for them. The trailer manufactures responded by using light gauge metal and just tack welding them on. There was more than just a few people killed because those things sometimes just fell off of trailers moving down the road. Not to mention the people killed because the Mansfield bar just folded and the car didn't stop until it hit the trail axle. It was a law without enforcement until about 2010. Still no side guards. Just wind skirts to save fuel. You cant buy a car or SUV that will save you from Newton's first law or the road trash trucks in the USA.

There is a whole long list of things that separate U.S. specification trucks from world class safe.

The rest of the civilized world moved on and Jeff Bezos can buy the entitlement-in-law to murder people on public property in the USA. Meanwhile Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer have bills, most wholesome and necessary for the good of the people, buried in subcommittee graves paid for with Bezos and Walton supplied swamp green.

Well….honestly…..with the amount of truck drivers I see every day at work who couldn’t pass an in cab inspection if their life depended on it…..not surprised. Mother fuckers don’t know where their oil pressure gauge is, where their air pressure gauge is, in some instances even where their fucking fuel tank is! They don’t know how to do a pre trip inspection…and now that the trucks are all automatic….god help us!

Actually you can get a working CDL at 15, that's how farm kids are able to drive grain trucks & tractors etc.

Sincerely, a grown up farm kid who had his CDL by the time he was 15.

The U.S. military retrofitted a whole generation of 5 ton trucks with ABS and other safety systems because they were killing to many soldiers back in the '80s.
