For the first time, since the breakup of Yugoslavia, I think we have a real possibility for a major war.

As the Ukrainians are not being used to calm down, they will persist in their genocide against Russians and press for seizing Crimea. This will definitely lead to war with Russia.

If Russia is forced to actually cross the border, why would they stop in the Donetz basin? It is an irrational idea. Therefore, the Russian Army will be in Kieve in a week. No two ways about it.

The one big question is will any Nato forces be moved into Ukraine/Sea of Azov, or take potshots at Russia from the Baltic States. I'm afraid that the odds are very high that some soy boy or girl will think it smart to engage Russia with Nato.

War has many surprises. However, looking at initial starting forces, reasonable developments can be deduced. Russia can be on the English Channel in a couple of months.

I do not have data on the Russian force's AWOL rate. I'll take your word for that. Regarding the equipment is dated, yes, many thousands are. Those are mostly in the reserves. there are many thousands of old BMP 1s still in the reserves, but it is still a very useful vehicle. The active-duty forces have mostly new and first-class equipment.

Remember Stalin's observation, "Quantity has a quality all its own".

The Russian Airforce will be at some disadvantage but in the big picture it will not matter--in the early stages anyway.
