On a Reddit/ATC thread, controllers were discussing the puzzling ground stop, which appears to have been contained to just the western United States. Some commented that they had not seen anything like it since 9/11. There was also an image that supposedly shows the flight slips with the ground stop orders on them that our friend @OSINTTechnical has reposted, as you can see below. We cannot confirm their authenticity at this time. While the incident is now confirmed, there are still a significant number of unanswered questions, including the most important one: what triggered this decision in the first place? And it happens to be the one product that had by far the lowest reserves available, with NG being the second shortest in supply (mostly Europe/Asia). Plane groundings won't end anytime soon. Don't think of peak energy as "we're running out of oil" because we're not running out of oil. It's just that the existing oil reserves are much more difficult to reach, extract and refine. It now takes 1 barrel of shale oil to deliver 5 or less barrels of oil to market. Whereas it took 1 barrel of sweet crude to deliver 20 or more barrels of oil to market. Then, on the other side you have decaying infrastructure necessary to delivery gasoline or diesel to the end user. That infrastructure needs constant repair and maintenance. Couple the 2 together and the cost of oil will now skyrocket but energy producers won't make a dime because inflation causes the cost of production to rise lock step. Therefore energy production becomes nationalized and then soon fails into chaos as government cannot run anything so complex, witness Venezuela. Modeling reality |

The most plausible theory which someone else suggested was that the military is simply using up their extra supplies so that they could have that funding in next year's budget.
