There are plenty of videos on drilling an old school hand pump well for probably a few hundred in parts and a day of work.

Dig out and build an outhouse for waste.

Fire can provide all of the electricity you really need if it is end times. If it is not end times, then can get a job and buy enough solar panels and batteries for what you would need in a minimalistic setup. Most panels should last 30 years. Batteries won't last that long, though.

A van down by the river is fine, but how are you going to stay warm? Fine in the south, but not in the north. Probably best to have a minimal off grid setup but also a mobile option in case you need to move (don't forget to account for gas being too expensive or plain not available).

They say the roads are so bad they can’t get cement trucks into their location so they have to drag bags of cement mix. Have people never heard of ATVs or Jeeps? Why hand carry items that could be loaded into a variety of off road vehicles? Maybe that’s just not bushycraft enough.

I get the idea of living off grid and learning skills for when TSHTF but damn, use the tools you have available while you can and save your back for been you really will need it. Part of living wisely is to work more efficiently…the old work smarter not harder.

Best shelter for hiding I ever built was in the group of large fallen hemlocks and pines that was difficult to navigate through #1 making it a place most would avoid and #2 using a tip up tree and the hole it left as my base for a shelter. Enlarge the hole and place poles across to a stable spot on the bottom of the rootball. plan on the entrance being next to the rootball (these can get 10' or taller laying on their sides, you know the tree roots and dirt in a big cone). Being on a downhill slope the top of the shelter blended in with the hillside. Cover roof with leaves and dead branches.

You want a hard to spot shelter but also in a place not likely to be walked in by anyone. Most people avoid big tangled messes and this works in large fields with lots of briars too. Finally, leave no obvious trail by changing routes in and out.
