No, it was not. My premise is that those inner voices -aka divinations- did not originate from a higher power but rather from either drug-induced or pre-existing psychoses. You must first understand that mental illness is not unique to our modern civilization, but has existed since man first walked upright and just because someone was hailed as a prophet of God didn't diminish that possibility.

In fact, while the soothsayers of ancient Greece and Rome were proclaimed to be touched by the Gods, it is just as plausible that they were just bat-shit crazy as they fondled the entrails of animal sacrifices or studied how a flock of birds would fly. And these are the things that could easily condemn a man -or entire towns- to death as they were used to justify wars with real or imagined enemies.

The ancients were without exception a superstitious lot and their complicated belief systems were centered around same; they readily accepted what those [frequently drugged out] prophets/priests stated and then carried out their proclamations to the letter.

The celebrated Greek "Oracle of Delphi" is a good example of this: before petitioners could even approach the Oracle, they first had to undergo a series of complex purification processes involving the annointing of oils, the drinking of sacred wines and the inhalation of burning herbs. Indeed, Pythia -the Oracle herself- sat concealed in a chamber beneath an altar in the Temple of Apollo where the strongest intoxicating incense burned. And whatever she incoherently uttered was considered to be coming directly from Apollo himself. Such was the power of superstitious suggestion.

It's also worth mentioning that several religions -including the Catholic church- still use burning censures today to consecrate their most significant rituals. The difference is that today in a cathedral you get harmless incense, but back then those vapors could send you into a deep hypnotic state.

BTW: did you know that the cult of the Delphic oracle still exists today and has a modern-day Priestess named Rachel Elizabeth Dare? But I wouldn't count of her having any more of a direct connection to the godhead than Pythia did.
