Moving maps and autopilot only serve to lure visual pilots Deeper into the shit . That panel probably cost 40k and a ifr rating costs 10 . Clownworld . |

Clownworld . a lot of people cannot handle the math involved in IFR Theres always a fear factor in upgrading but most find their fears are unfounded . The math required is actually the same except ifr filghts are monitored so any screwups may generate a "call the faa" message . A typical pilot calculation is descent point , same for visual or ifr , we need to lose 5000 feet - at 500fpm is ten minutes . Plane covers 3 miles per minute so we descend at 30 miles . Its that simple . |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 80816042 United States 01/01/2022 01:11 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | the biggest difference between being a VFR rated pilot and an IFR rated pilot, is the proven ability to focus for long periods of time, follow exact procedures as read and verified, and most of all trust your instruments because you have spent countless hours learning their ever tick and buffet, and you can see them all at once in your periphery, and react to their very first movements. There is no replacement for the training required to learn how to do this, and it is VERY common for pilots to get into IMC suddenly and die, suddenly. There is usually a wide gap between IMC and VMC type pilots. Most places it isn't an issue at all, but in places with sudden weather changes, it is a real killer. if anyone is curious about these things, go take an introductory lesson for cheap at your local airport. Get some time on the controls, and listen to what your instructor has to say about the miracle of flight. |

Did you even watch the entire video? He was IFR rated. The NTSB states most airplane crashes aren't due to a single mistake, but a serious of poor decisions which lead to catastrophe. Source Link: [link to news.mit.edu (secure)] The "IFR" rated pilot can't figure out why his air speed indicated stopped working while flying in clouds? Your air speed indicator turns into an altimeter if the static port is blocked with ice or other debris. He should have immediately recognize it but continued to make more mistakes. Cold weather and flying in clouds (visible moisture) causes icing conditions. The moron pilot didn't even think to go through checklist and verify pitot tube heat was set on. I was taught when in icing conditions like he was, you first want to try and climb out of the clouds, not descend from. Descending tend to make icing conditions worse. That's why on the checklist when descending for landing it states apply carb heat and pitot heat (as needed). Some planes also have wing deicing, so you can still fly in inclement weather like he was. The only smart thing he did was contact ATC and advise them of situation and request vectors to closest airport. The pilot needs to go back and learn flying on analog instruments, he clearly was work overloaded playing with his expensive glass cockpit and ATC instead of flying the plane. First rule of flying, FLY THE DAMN PLANE. He also thought he was such a good pilot, he didn't need to file a Flight Plan. Overconfidence is the number one killer of pilots, I'm betting he has around 300 hrs PIC time. Last Edited by Agent MIB on 01/01/2022 02:22 AM You are born with the truth, then taught a lie. |
