Why healthy sleep is important for learning, memory, cognitive health, and dreams.

In 1990, a memory-forming protein was discovered by Alfonso Represa[1] called neurogranin. Since its discovery, research into neurogranin expression was found to play a role in how the brain forms memory[2]. Neurogranin is a postsynaptic neural protein, that is found in high quantities in the cortex, hippocampus, striatum, and amygdala.

Neurogranin is a biomarker in Alzheimer’s disease and cognitive impairment.[3] A decrease in Ng in blood plasma exomes and an increased level appears in cerebral spinal fluid CFS. Sleep deprivation[4] also causes a significant reduction in Ng levels by as much as 40%[5]. It has been known since 2013 in sleep apnea studies that sleep deprivation impairs long-term memory[6] And total sleep deprivation leads to serious health issues and even death. [7] REM impairment and poor sleep can impact learning development as much as 40%[8]

Understanding the benefits of a good night’s sleep and why we should strive towards a baseline average of 7-8 hours of uninterrupted sleep as an optimal marker for cognitive health stems from other important neuroscientific discoveries regarding how REM sleep is important for cognitive development[9] and neuronal development and maintenance[10]. Studies on the hippocampus during sleep plays a role in long-term memory consolidation[11] and learning development[12] during a process known as hippocampal replay. In addition to learning development and memory consolidation. Hippocamplay-replay has also been observed with memory retrieval[13].

Here's another article on stunted dream development with five-sensory replay if you lack all sensory faculties vision/hearing/touch/taste and smell. Plus some great findngs on premediate sleep.

Then why do newborns only sleep 45minutes, and your other young kids wake you up at night?

God doesn’t want women to have healthy sleep.

Sleep is important but that doesn't mean it doesn't get interrupted. Sometimes the biggest challenge is the environment we are in.

I truly think poor sleep is behind a LOT of what is called "mental illness".

Poor sleep is about over-all unwellness, often. There's lots you can try to do to get better sleep.

Newborns need to be fed every 2 hours, because a cycle of sleep is 90 minutes...1.5 hours sleep and 30 minutes to feed and change...

How many children do you have??

Yep, our sleep is vital for a lot of body and mind maintenance. Sleep deprivation can lead to exactly that... or even death if it's extreme.

And drug use... certain drugs can lead to problems right through the sleep chain.

It can cause premediate sleep disorders like drug induce hypnogogic hallucination disorder, drug-induced REM disorder, and drug-induced nightmares.

Working on another paper covering the impact of drugs during this vital cognitive development and maintenance cycle of sleep. Will post once it's complete. Things the 'pushers' often don't tell people when claiming it's good for things like dreaming if it's one of the substances that can lead to these disorders.

The answer to that, is that god(nature), wants the mother to be worried, about her new born, and be on edge and aware all the time about threats and dangers to the baby.

Thats why nature wants mothers of new born to not have much sleep. Nature wants the mother of the new born, to be seriously on edge so she is so worried about the new born baby, so she can protect it.

Thats why new born babies do that, and so mothers of new born have little to no sleep.

nature does things for a reason.

The reason for mothers of new born, getting little sleep due to baby crying, is because nature wants the mother to protect that new born, and be so scared of any possible dangers to that new born.

Glad, i never had any kids, but i am just telling you this, as nature does this for that reason.

A mother of a newly born baby, is supposed to get little sleep due to her being so afraid for the protection of that new born baby, so that baby survives early life, when its weak.

Mothers of new born, are supposed to learn alot about themselves at these times.

Thats why mothers of new born babies are supposed to be highly stressed, ie to help that little baby come through the possible dangers of being born into a dangerous world.

Exactly, I'm just covering what it does for cognitive health but also there is a lot going on for our body too. Why althetes really need to get the GH cycle with REM. REM is probably one of the most important cycles of our sleep.

Also why I recommend not to use stimulants before sleep because they can affect the REM cycle.

"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to fear."

Too much sleep on a regular basis can increase the risk of diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and death according to several studies done over the years. Too much is defined as greater than nine hours. Moms can’t sleep when baby sleeps unless it’s her first child. Otherwise she has to stay awake til night time like everyone else.

No they don’t sleep thru the night til 2 years old. Unless you lock them in their own room which i dont agree with.
They feed multiple times a night til 9 months. Then about twice a night. Growing things like pregnant women and kids can’t go all night without food or drink. Unless you force an unreasonable standard on them and change their nature.

Yea I would say that’s true. I start getting intense anxiety about danger like driving in cars, at about 8 months pregnant. I don’t want to go anywhere. Then when the baby is born I wake up to a pin drop all night long. The first 9 months of 2 hr of cumulative sleep a night is like Guantanamo Bay torture.

I had a bad double neck fusion and could not sleep but 2-4 hours a night for over 3 years..

Came across a supplement you can buy online without a script.. that Astronauts use in space to calm them down to sleep.

Immediately I knew this was safe, as the medical system does not give pilots and astronauts anything that will make them groggy...

Search... Buy PHENIBUT .. it is a GABA derivative the Russians invented.. GABA is the brain chemical that calms the chatter in your brain so you can go to sleep. It does not actually put you to sleep.. you just lose interest.. but can awake and take care of business.. and go back to sleep.

1/8 rounded tsp and I sleep 8 hours.. 1/4 tsp and I sleep 12 hours.. one can only take it 2 times a week.. so your body does not get use to it.

I hardly ever need it now.. except if I have a rough week, or am physically so tired.. I can not sleep.

Magnesium is also important .. as it relaxes muscles.. Epsom Salt baths.. 2+ cups in hot water for 35-40 minutes is like an IV of Magnesium.

GABA plays a big role in our sleep. It is release along with Glycine which stops neural-tranmissions to the muscles which causes the 'sleepers-paralysis' and it helps in other functions with hippocampus oscillation and wave-patterns.

It's also been linked to cause temporal illusions in dreams, so too much, you might get some effects of dreams lasting very long even though you slept briefly.
