Buying precious metals question.
If I wanted to invest in gold and silver (not the paper bullshit kind), is it better to buy coins or bars?

Is it better to buy whole 1 ounce coins/bars or several smaller coins/bars?

Is there a ratio between gold and silver that would work best?

I don't really have that much to invest, but see it just as a protection against inflation and interest on my savings account is 0%...

1 Ounce, 1/2 Ounce and 1/4 Ounce Gold coins

You can buy historical gold coins instead of the 1/4.

Did your country not have gold guilders once ? Or German 20 Reichsmark coins instead and 20 Franken Vrenelis.

Yes, we did have gold guilders and ducats, but they are always sold out as soon as they come on the market or severely overpriced...

Re: Buying precious metals question.
its basically up to what you like. avoid shit that is way over spot.the goal is to increase overall metal weight. pawn shops and gold and silver shops will only pay a certian % of the spot price anyway. you MIGHT see slightly higher resale value with eagles and maples.

The basic reason to buy PM’s is a store of value against inflation

The basic reason for buying coins is there % of metal is established and accepted - and if you ever NEED to sell the price will be more stable

Joe blow bars of silver or gold - the “average” person does not have a way of knowing the quality - granted there are many many well known marks on bars that are accepted by wholesale market

But - if you try to hand a cab driver or baker a coin or a bar of silver for the ride/ loaf - what’s he gonna say? “Hey buddy - how do I know how much silver is in that?” Or “I’ll take the coin, thank you”

And if you buy “junk” ( old US silver coins pre 1964 ) silver, that will definitely be accepted in crazy times.

American eagle coins are face valued and legal tender.

Hence spending federal reserve notes on legal tender gold and silver eagle coins is actually a net loss.

Define "better".

Coins are more recognizable and easier to verify.

Bars are usually the best bang for the buck.

Why you really need gold and silver is for loss of confidence in government.

I stacked a lot of silver until I realized it was 40 lbs!
Gold is much more portable and the premiums on Sovereigns is pretty low..swiss franc gold coins or french roosters is a good way to go.
Gold is WAY more portable than silver but silver is way undervalued..I'd get some of each.

I've looked at buying a silver kilo bags of our old guilder currency (and from other countries) . But how would one know how much silver there is in each coin? Trading would be a hassle with the average person..

Doesn't matter.

Is it better to buy whole 1 ounce coins/bars or several smaller coins/bars?

Unless you're buying 90% "junk" silver, the smallest you should buy in silver is one ounce, anything smaller and the premiums are ridiculous. For gold, I might go as small as 1/4 ounce. Anything over a kilogram of silver or over 10 ounces for gold, is probably much tougher to move.

Is there a ratio between gold and silver that would work best?

Whatever your preference is. The thing is, if you want to put $50K into PMs, you will likely have a very different ratio than if you want to put $10M into it. Silver is not very value per space efficient. A single person might have trouble carrying a 500 ounce monster box of silver coins any distance. That's like $13-14K in value. Meanwhile, the same amount will purchase like 7 ounces of gold, which is very portable and easy to move.

I don't really have that much to invest, but see it just as a protection against inflation and interest on my savings account is 0%...

The basic reason for buying coins is there % of metal is established and accepted - and if you ever NEED to sell the price will be more stable
