Getting them tested is sensible. They don’t yet know how effective the current vaccines are against omicron. They also don’t know how many unvaxxed used fake documentation to get in.

There is research showing that the Omicron variant is even better at avoiding vaccine anti-bodies then Delta. It's not surprising a ton of people got it.

That said to my knowledge all Omicron cases have been fairly mild, and if that's the case, it could be this variant becomes endemic but it mild enough (Unlike the original) that it's just something we live with. Or maybe they will develop (And charge) you treatment for it, who knows?

It's a good thing for them to measure.

Last article I read said there was about 15 cases; but that was probably before they contacted all 35K.

The vaccine doesn't prevent transmission; especially from Omicron; but so far this is a MILD less dangerous variant.

What we should do is develop a home antigen test that is Omicron specific and one that is Delta specific. If someone is positive for Omicron they should go out and spread it more, if they have Delta they should quarantine. This will help the less dangerous virus out complete delta.

Considering it requires genomic sequencing to determine one of these so called variants, I'd love to know how they decided to send this particular person's swab into that special lab, and then of course it just so happens to link to 35K others in NYC.

Seems to me like they're laying out the foundation of a brand new narrative, and just time in for the peak of flu season.
