BUT THAT DOESN'T/SHOULDN'T CHANGE THE VERDICT. Your privilege of self defense doesn't go away because you're stupid or immature. Geez this is stressful. I have kids his age and I could easily see them or any of their friends in the same situation - trying to do something they think is worthwhile or important or noble... They're too young to see the danger or backside of any such decision. That kid did not go there looking to shoot anyone. He went there to feel like a hero who did something right for a community he felt tied to. I think he fully expected to leave that night feeling he accomplished a little bit of good. You can't punish a kid for being stupid. We have all been there. Why shouldn't he have been there? I guess you believe teens should be like most adults, playing sports or watching it and not getting involved in supporting communities or doing anything of any true value to society? Stick your head in the sand, cower and hope no one intrudes in your neighborhood. Guess it is good you are not on the jury because you would likely wimp out and go against your conscience to do what is right because you live in fear. He should not have been there because he was 17 and not going to change anything. I have also argued those killed should not have been there. So fuck off. There's a reason 18 is the threshold and as a mom I'd have beat his ass for even thinking about it. If he was an adult and wanted to go protect his community or render aide, rock on. And no if I were on the jury I would argue we don't punish him for being in a bad place at a bad time. We judicate on the facts which were as clear self defense as Caribbean waters.
