REAL DOOM: HVAC Ductwork Materials Impossible To Get, Bye Bye New Construction Homes
I work in heating and air business. We’ve had some supply chain issues the last year and we have always been able to work around it by using an alternate brand, model or part. But that’s all changed in the last 2 weeks. Flexible ductwork in common sizes 5”, 6” and 7” are becoming impossible to get. Something to do with the spiral wire that keeps the flexible duct semi-rigid. If you can get ductwork your can’t build houses. Factory is saying 10 MONTHS on new orders. It’s hard enough selling jobs during off season, now we can’t complete the jobs we sold because there’s no materials. This is bad. Very bad.

O look. Somebody who thinks they know it all. Yes you can use what we call in the industry hard pipe and wrap it depending on your city or county codes that is.

Doors and vinyl siding are nowhere to be found here.

He is talking about rigid metal hvac pipe duct, some commercial customers spec rigid only. Rigid actually flows better but takes multiple times longer to fit and requires insulation.

I’m a builder. It is getting to be a pain in the ass. I think they’re intentionally doing it. Their goal is for everyone to use ductless mini-splits. I think in Washington they’ve already banned natural gas in new construction and I heard Oregon will do it soon.

You can use metal ducting. It’s more work and a pain the ass, so they prefer flex.

Rigid ductwork was common back in the 50's, 60's and early 70's. Flex duct is easier to use, hence cheaper to install.

I hate duct board.i really hate it.its needle spikes and decays rapidly.go home itching every day.lean on it or bump it and its ruined.
Better to use rigid metal than board.
As for ball valves then go up or double down in size.better to go up.less labor.

I don’t think Daikin would let that fly. These ports that feed the evaps are either 5/8 or 1/2

This anon is correct. But its called rigid duct pipe that will need insulation, OP cannot find flexible ducting that is insulated.

I am having a hard time getting insulation batts currently.

Rigid pipe will work, but it's more expensive to purchase and install.

Clever people will find a way around the shortage, but it'll cost ya!

On house with 20 branch ducts, the difference between hard pipe and flex is huge. It’s going to be a major problem. Guess what happens when every contractor simultaneously switches to hard pipe when the demand and inventory was extremely low up until the last month or so??
