I'm quite sure the sustained movement under La Palma is from the upper mantle which begins at 35km and goes approx. 400 hundred km deeper, moving into the chambers that are shallower. There is an endless supply of magma if the pressure keeps moving it up! I think this ends in a caldera collapse. Somehow this hotspot is tied to plate movement, and there's lots of plate action for weeks. Hard time accepting I'm a fear monger with the volcano going all out right now. You may find this site interesting, it locates all the subduction slabs at depths. I had no idea the slabs can remain solid and suspended! Check the Tomography viewer, so many slabs! [link to www.atlas-of-the-underworld.org] Some slabs 'melt' but others are suspended in the mantle at different angles. This is what it says : "The Gibraltar anomaly (Figure A34a) is located in the upper mantle below the Alboran Sea. Its base is resting on the 660 km discontinuity, and it is still connected to Atlantic crust in the west, is dipping eastwards and is interpreted as subducted lithosphere." Could this be a reason for the activity there as one end is suspended down and east and the other is connected to the crust on the west?  very interesting ty. |
