I saw a Dunkin Donuts, today, they close at 2pm, can't find employees to work there.

Whatever is happening is getting worse, not better.

I don't get this shortage of drivers issue everywhere. The roads are as busy as ever but when you try to buy a washing machine say, you need to wait 2 or 3 weeks for free delivery due to this driver shortage they claim, then next sentence they offer next day delivery for 50 quid lol??

It is manufactured somewhere in the process and everything else is a knock on effect and the retailers are just cashing in on it as you now have to pay for what was once free (next day delivery)

Lol everyone arguing that it's low product, low unloaders or low haulers.

Why can't it be all three?

I worked at a donut shop in high school after school until 10:30 pm in the late 80s. Cleaning and selling. It actually was a great job for a 1 employee loner. Barely anybody came in other then cops and I was baked off my ass and drinking special export on the weekends. Plenty of time to get homework done and worked there through my first two years of community college.

After two major tech layoffs in this journey, I would go back to that job in a heartbeat.

Plenty of trucking firms under 100 employees hiring, that pay BETTER than companies like ODF.

The problem with being a trucker, if you're married, is that you're seldom home.

Also, many women "entertain" themselves while your gone.

What kind of guy wants to leave home for weeks and always be wondering who the old lady is banging? Not too may guys would like that setup.

In summary, if you're single it might be a great opportunity to live on the cheap, work all you can and save for a down payment on a home.

There were articles of perishable loads going bad while waiting to be offloaded.....my friend in the import/export business confirms the bottleneck at the docks....

If there be a trucker shortage it is because rates are already high and truckers don't have to go to California to make a good living right now.

Their is no shortage of trucks to haul freight nor truckers to haul it. There's a good reason to avoid California like the plague if you can and right now theres plenty of freight without suffering Californias bullshit.

Add to that the bullshit that truckers have to deal with in union shops in California and the added bullshit in the ports. Why would anyone want that grief?

And truckers don't have a union rep. They have the fucking DOT for a union rep. How does that sound?

There are no drivers because they all are DEAD from the various side effects caused by the vxxx and are quietly assigned a different cause of death and buried or cremated.

The shortages are deliberate. Job wise, you all damn well know it's primarily because of the kill shot requirement by many businesses. I don't know one person who doesn't want to work and I know plenty who have lost their job because they won't take a kill shot.

From my own experience railheads and ports. They all suck. Most the workers are union and assholes. They drag thier feet to do anything. I have seen them smash into trailers then drive away not a care in the world.
Most port / railhead drivers are owner operators. A large amount of them went under when covid hit and nothing was coming in. A lot went to other companies or other jobs.
Rail and port drivers are kinda looked down on by the trucking community. They have a reputation for running substandard trucks, driving aggressively, running illegal, and just being generally low class assholes.

Duh, you can't get a CDL commercial drivers license if your pee test showes marijuana in your urine. Marijuana stays in your urine for weeks. Drop the federal mandates to test for marijuana use and you have no more shortage of CDL holders.
I'm not saying its ok to use marijuana while or right before driving a truck. But while not driving the night before should be allowed. Problem solved.

Been trucker for years. All the jobs out there now no young people want to do the hours. Being gone for days etc. Weekends... Not hard to understand. Hell I dont want too be here. That is the problem. Only people we get are 65 retired and want the hiring bonus. Young people will not live this life. Like I said dont blame them. Not a great life to live. Along with some where many people went poof for other jobs so they pay more. Where the hell did everyone go??? Dead? I do not know.

And people who say there are as many trucks on the road as before. BS. Truck stops are not as full. I know it looks busy as always but nope. Its has to be 20 percent less or more is my guess. To many other jobs and bull shit you have to go through now days to get a cdl. Not going to happen for most people. Hell I am thinking of getting out. Sick of the dispatch calling oh hey can you take this run??? We really need you. After a while double pay they offer even is not enough. Thinking of taking a job being a janitor that pays 25 bucks a hour now since they cant find anyone. 8 hrs a day and home every night. Fuck this life on the road.

I agree with you, for a lousy 44 cents per mile, it is not doing OTR. As they say, it's not a job, it's a "lifestyle", albeit one that sucks. Throw in the dash cams that phone home every time you hit the brakes a bit too hard or follow another truck too closely, it's like, "Who needs this bullshit?".

My dream is for all the OTR drivers to just quit and let the fuckers starve.

Same here, I was glad to let it go, the trucking industry has gone crazy. It used to be a pretty good life but as guberment got more involved it went to shit.

When society falls apart, the last place you want to be is in an over the road truck with no weapon or supplies to sustain you. Very indefensible target of opportunity for future banditos.

The NEWS says the California port situation is caused by a driver shortage.

Not so fast: It is in part caused by a California Truck Ban which says all trucks must be 2011 or newer and a law called AB 5 which prohibits Owner Operators.

Traditionally the ports have been served by Owner Operators (non union). California has now banned Owner Operators.
Long term, truckers in California are not investing in new trucks because California has a law that makes them illegal in 2035. The requirement is to purchase electric trucks which do not exist.
