Prepping: Low Cost Black out kit for Power outage
Here is a VERY low cost simple black out kit to use during a short term power outage. This is not super cool or tactical but it does work and it can bring a lot of comfort to a dark night.

but I don't think it is just going to be a black out for one night ... they will take us right to the point of chaos and then "save" us ... you need to think more long term to stay out of the FEMA kamps... and batteries don't last long ... unless you have re-chargeable one and some way to re-charge them that doesn't require electricity ... (a cheap wind-up charger for them and your cell phone)

I have a few "oil lamps" and extra fuel and cases of candles and a roll of wicks to recycle the wax and make more candles ... by the time I have run out of them I will have learned to get up and go to bed with the chickens HA.

but a generator is going to be a MUST to keep your appliances running (even propane stoves, water heaters and space heaters all have electric thermostats - and gas for them is getting really expensive ... and hard to "keep"

... so at least a pile of wood to keep your rocket-stove running

Thanks for the comments. I thought this would be a good place to start for really new people. With prepping its easy to just firehose people with info, so much so that they get discouraged and never try. Hopefully this is easy enough that it will get some wheels turning.

Re: Prepping: Low Cost Black out kit for Power outage
Damn how often does this guy lose power to check the batteries once a month? We lost power one time in 10 years here and it was only for 10 minutes. Now when I was growing up a long time ago we would lose power about once a year as long as 2 days. If you have gas to your house and a few candles and a lighter you can survive indefinitely. Turn your gas stove on use a lighter to start it and fill pots with water for winter warmth. Light a few candles for light. A flashlight can be good for walking and a battery powered radio for keeping up to day on the black out. With the modern cell phones I would get a solar powered charger as well for daytime charging. I guess with the worker shortages we have coming power outages could become common again so a little planning never hurts.
