'organic' is SUPPOSED to mean something

it means there were no pesticides used, and no chemical fertilizers.

however, there would have to be trusted government officials to verify this, that part of it is the joke of course

also a lot of food uses dyes, the bananas, the oranges, the apples, are actually dyed. and even waxed.

also, they add all kinds of shit to meats, like nitrites.

Organic is SUPPOSED to mean NONE of that is used. it would be worth the price if it was for real, and I think some of th e stores may verify but you'd have to have government inspectors test to see if you used pesticides or chemical fert, or poured nitrates in the chicken etc etc

i mean, if the oranges are bright orange, they have dye. If the apples are just bright red, they have car wax on them

Walmart has a section for organic beef they sell Wagyu steaks for about $30/lb.

The same $30.00/lb steak is then ground into patties and sold for $5.00 a pound.

Not too bad...not too bad at all

Yes, it’s organic so the price will be a bit more than the other options, but it’s jumped up from $5.99 a pound to $7.99 a pound.

If this keeps going up, I’m going to have to learn to go straight vegetarian soon.

Lucky you, in Vegas at Albertson the organic free range breast were $8.99 a pound. It’s getting expensive to eat proper foods, the junk over inflated size chicken is very cheap but very bad for you. I feel your pain!

Just bought an 80lb case (8 x 10lb sealed tubes) of 90/10 ground beef at Sam's for $262.40 (3.28/lb).

Seemed fine to me. Bought it to continue loading the 6ft freezer though... $3.28/lb won't be around for long.

i quit buying soylent green in the tubes.
 Quoting: Doom-browser

Yes, those tubes are nasty. For about the past 2 years, you have to pay a little more for decent meat. I base my recipes for the week on what was on sale. Lots of rice, veggies and bean will stretch your meals. If something goes up too high, I base my meals on something else. I've got a chest freezer so I stock up on sales.

I spend about $350 a month on meat for a family of 4. Not my total grocery bill, but I cook from scratch as much as possible.

I used to think the same way until I studied and researched GMO foods.

There is very good reason I buy mostly non-GMO/organic. I won’t bother going into the details though. One needs to be willing to learn for any educational information to be of any benefit, but I strongly encourage you to learn and understand the slow, insidious damage GMO foods are doing to your body.

Re: $11.35 for TWO chicken breasts at Kroger
I'm in FL. Ground beef is now at $10/lb. Not even funny. I pretty much have to live keto/carnivore, and I lived on sirloin steaks....and now a sirloin steak is $26/lb. they can shove it.

Ribs are still cheap enough..Pork is reasonably affordable. I don't prefer it, but meat is meat when you can't eat much else. I was vegan for 5 years back in my 20's...and it wasnt good. I had gut issues all the time, repeated vacations in the hospital for weeks at a time, and it turns out I'm celiac, so I can't eat grains or anything with grain in it, can't eat most processed boxed stuff...even grain that technically isn't gluten is often cross contaminated...so I simply can't digest it. All the froo froo people that go "gluten free" just because and then tell the world to be vegan...UGH...trust me...if you are celiac for real...you get sick, have pain and poop your damn guts out every time you encounter it....they do labs and scope you to diagnose it.

They are trying to get us all to go "vegan" but trust me...if you are in my shoes, and a legit real life celiac, that doesn't work, and you basically have to live on meat and lower carb veggies to keep from being sick every day. My grocery bill has been going off the charts lately...and often I resort to eggs or protein shakes just because it's cheaper that way. Who would ever think protein shakes would be cheaper than hamburger??? (I'd much prefer the burger.)

This is exactly why we raise and butcher our own meats...
Find a friend who has a farm and butchers their own meats and go in with them on a half or full side of beef and if you eat pork the same.

You can keep chickens almost anywhere, use them for laying hens and have some for butchering.

Folks are going to figure out pretty quickly why their Grandparents canned their own food and raised their own meats.

You can build a smoke house and smoke your meats.

Ingles have $1.50 each oranges!
 Quoting: GA Girl

Last time I bought oranges, the skin was super thick so a good 40% of it was thrown away. Hardly worth the purchase.

I like pineapple but I only buy it on sale because I cut literally 50% of it off and throw it away (skin and core). That effectively doubles the price for what you’re getting.

I buy my poultry from a family farm. It's a bit pricey but it's worth it (for now) - they're good people, they love farming, take good care of their animals and they only hire local labor. I raise my own chickens, but only for their eggs.

Those are some big chicken breasts - I could easily make several meals out of that for my husband and I. Look up Asian recipes. Also, I prefer buying whole chickens - more economical, more uses and you can use the bones to make broth.

I diced and sautéed them to use in salads.

As to eggs, I buy them from a local farmer. Their chickens roam freely all day eating bugs and worms, so the egg yolks are deep orange and very flavorful. Ten times better than anything at a grocery store.

On page 1 Tuna suggested raising chickens. If you have room it's a good idea.

My sister and her husband are not the smartest bunch and live in the city. (They are plenty smart but I love laying it in to city folks).

They raise chickens,6 of them, and have more eggs than they can handle.

Killing them I know is another issue when you've raised them from chicks. But if you can get over that hurdle.

Infinite chicken! As long as you have feed or a good wormy/insect filled land.

Most municipalities don’t permit farm animals to be raised in town. I’d love to live rurally where I can do that, but right now that’s not an option for me. Perhaps in another couple years though.
