The Hub’s editor-at-large Sean Speer spoke with Ian Brodie, the former chief of staff to Stephen Harper, for some insight into how governments handle classified and top secret information.

One of David Johnston’s key findings is the following: “Staff at the PMO speak of being given a large binder in a secure room with an agency client relations officer present, a short time to review it, with no context or prioritization of the material, and no ability to take notes (for security reasons).

IAN BRODIE: I don’t understand this part of the report. When Mr. Trudeau’s chief of staff testified at committee recently, she spoke of a system in which she was briefed regularly and nothing was withheld from the prime minister.

SEAN SPEER: What did you take away from the report? Was there anything that surprised you?

IAN BRODIE: Johnston is correct: relying on seriatim media reports of bits and pieces of intelligence reporting can give the reader an incomplete picture of what was known and when it was known. Simply saying “trust us, it’s fine” is even less helpful. What would help everyone understand what was going on? A full, public inquiry that prepares a full report to everyone.

Trudeau Liberals backtrack on banning citizens from using checks to pay taxes
Canadians have had the right to pay their tax debts by cash or check since the founding of the nation's revenue agency in 1917.

After recent pushback from Conservative MPs, the cabinet of the federal government of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau now says it will not enforce a new forthcoming rule which will ban citizens from paying tax debts over $10,000 by check.

“People can continue to use paper to file their return if they choose,” clarified Pierre Leblanc, the director general of personal income tax at the Department of Finance during testimony at a Senate national finance committee held two weeks ago.

The new rule regarding banning paying large tax debts by check was inserted into part of the federal omnibus budget Bill C-47, or Budget Implementation Act. It will likely become law soon.

The bill is currently being debated in the House of Commons; however, it has faced resistance from the Conservative Party of Canada (CPC) which has been trying to stall its passage via a filibuster.

Trudeau’s finance minister, Chrystia Freeland, has vowed to try and stop the filibuster but has not yet been able to.

CPC MP Marty Morantz said, “This piece about having to pay electronically over $10,000, what if somebody doesn’t want to do that or doesn’t know how?”

“Why can’t they pay by check?” he asked.

When senators during the committee meeting pressed Gwyer on why the threshold of $10,000 was picked, he responded that “$10,000 was identified as being a number that was high enough that it would be reasonable to expect that most people would likely be making that payment electronically anyway.”

If Johnston remains in his role, he will be fully complicit in Trudeau’s anti-democratic and anti-Canadian coverup.

We aren’t a ‘direct democracy,’ in that most of the time we don’t get to vote directly on what happens. Instead, we are a representative democracy in which we elect people who then vote on what policies will be implemented.

But what happens when a government has a minority of the seats, gets repeatedly outvoted on key issues, and then ignores those votes?
