Basically what happened was the police shut off entrance to the center of the city where the protest was planned so the protesters gathered in Richmond, an inner suburb. The police presence there was not as strong so the protesters marched without too much opposition to the police until they were forced east in the direction away from the city. The protesters then headed north for a few blocks then turned west back into the city. This road passes through a cutting where the police blocked the protesters from both sides so the protesters had no choice but to charge the police lines.
