The crowd was herded and funneled into a choke point and very few police were used to hold them back, far less than they had at their disposal.

yes the CBD was blocked off - so the offical meeting place was changed- to just outside the CBD- they walked around inner city suburbs getting blocked in a few times but escaping down sideroads and through an apt block driveway- that scene you saw in the OP was right at the end- and there was no way out but to do what they did and charge at the end.
