I must admit, I also found the whole Jodi Arias case to be fake tv also. It was laughably dumb story to me, movie of the week style evidence pics and perp. But, the public will buy it on and on ad infinitum and stay distracted with it.
This seems to have the same hallmarks.

I think more than 2/3 of Dateline stories are made up at the NBC Universal studios. Or sometimes ABC/Disney will have a big fake news story Drama. This might be a Youtube TV effort in conjunction with a few seasoned fake news drama departments.
