All I know is the school I worked at had fun classes, and the kids were speaking fluent English by age 10.

Hell yes it's ok. The kids were running around already playing in the hot sun at recess right? No one's too exhausted to chit chat and fool around in line though. Sounds like some needed a damn jog around the court a few times even after recess was over- It's a basketball court not a football field.

Those children need to be obedient under the care of other adults who are telling them to be quiet and line up to go inside. If your kid was quiet and they suffered a bit taking it for the whole team as all were, good, next time they can apply some peer pressure and give dirty looks to the kids who don't listen and get them to stop instead of egging them on by looking at them in a positive way as they follow the rule of no talking, yet egg them on with eyes of interest instead of disinterest.

If it was too damn hot to play outside, NO ONE SHOULD HAVE BEEN OUTSIDE.

I was waiting for someone to pull out that argument. My aim was for a quiet, disciplined but fun class where kids could learn English, so they could communicate with the outside world better.

I noticed collective punishment is being used on whole towns to enforce COVID rules. In that context, it's the worst evil you can get. They tried it in Taiwan. Anyone who has had contact with Person X has to self-quarantine for 15 days. Yes, that is beyond evil, and a very effective social enforcement tool.

Don't equate that with a 5 minute punishment for 10 kids.

What you forget is this was a private school, and people can leave any time.

Just another yuppy parent.... Teach your own children. I knew how to cook my breakfast with a gas stove when I was 5. If I misbehaved the school would discipline me. Then the parents would spank me when I got home. After awhile I became a citizen instead of another puke. Participation awards and cowardly parents make communists happy even when they call it socialism, liberal thinking, progressive thinking, et al.

Is this Florida? When we lived in Florida and my son went to Kindergarten and 1st grade he had similar experience. They had to bring their own water bottle. If they forgot or left there water bottle on the bus or whatever they got no water, SHE WOULD NOT ALLOW THEM TO DRINK FROM THE WATER Fountain. Like your son they had to run laps in the hot Florida sun and when you are 5 and 6 years old, are you really monitoring your water bottle?

That does sound like child abuse. Should be reported, but be careful, in todays world, they'd sic the CPS on ya for reporting them or teacher.

Our child did not misbehave. Other children did. All these 6, 7, 8 year olds were punished by sitting on hot concrete, extreme sun, no ability to move, no ability to communicate to the teacher, some then forced to run laps, and this was at least 5 minutes, maybe 10 minutes. We are hoping other parents hear a similar story and report it as well.

No, the punishment does not fit the crime. These are 2nd graders for Christ sake. So, basically, the point is that students MUST NOT TALK IN LINE OR ELSE EVERYONE ELSE WILL BE PUNISHED AS WELL. I don't care. I would be so pissed. Schools are out of control. Your kid should not have to pay for other kids breaking the rules...which, btw, ARE STUPID rules anyway. Is this a fucking military academy? Why can't they chat in line??? And it's too hot to be outside standing around. I suggest that you get over to that school and shame the teacher in front of everyone. Someone has to stand up for the kids!

If your child had to wear a mask in the heat, yes it would be a problem.

I have found a soft but stern approach works really well. Principals are used to parents screaming and if you go to them and say, "hey this is a problem but I am giving you the chance to deal with it before it's an issue." I have had good luck.

Doing laps as punishment is awesome. I would be cool with it. Sounds like they aren't trying to raise your kid to be a pussy like you are.

Big deal, when I was in school the teachers and who ever else, kept us in line with much more discipline then what you speak.

I find it amusing that your child cannot be in the sun for 5 minutes without wining and crying. We always were out in the sun and 5 minutes would never have been considered torture.
We walked a mile to the the bus stop in 20 below. Our spittle would freeze before it hit the ground.

Run a lap around the courts? We had to run 10 or 20 laps.

You should be thankful that these children are being taught to respect the rules and are disciplined to do so.

I could go on about many things I went through as a child and what I hear here is a walk in the park.

I think that a basic requirement of an adult position in day care is that the person has raised young children themself.

To clarify, this was in addition to being outside for recess. The children were then seated in the sun, 90+ degrees around noon, moderately high humidity, no clouds, not allowed to move or talk for at least 5 minutes, possibly 10. Even if a young 6, 7 or 8 year old raised their hand they were ignored. It was definitely meant as a punishment.

Yep, I was going to say the same about football players, so true! There are rules and considering how small second graders are, that is an inappropriate punishment at best and a whackjob staff member who imposed it.

Shit, my school lost me at one of those Presidential Fitness Runs in the late 80's when I was 7 years old. I lived 8 miles out of town and ended up walking the majority of the way home before my Dad saw and picked me up.

This exact thing happened to me in either 2nd or 3rd grade. I remember because I remember where we lined up those years. I remember being upset. I was never the kid doing something wrong, but we always got punished as a group. That pavement was HOT.

Well, I survived. And now I homeschool my own kids. :)
