I need a ruling from GLP concerning something the school did today.

My child is in 2nd grade, it's about 90 degrees outside and no shade. After lunch they go to recess.

When recess is over they have the kids lineup and take them inside.

Today some children were talking when they were in line so they had everyone sit in the sun and wait there at least 5 minutes before they were allowed back inside. My child described it as torture.

The children that were still talking were then forced to run a lap around the basketball courts.

My question, is this form of punishment ok? My child wasn't even one of the ones talking.

I spent 5 minutes outside in the direct sun today and I was sweating hard. But at least I could walk over into the shade if I wanted.

When I was in high school we had two a day football practices in the summer, in texas, and nobody got heat stroke.

And we went full bore all day.

Yup. Same here. We also did not wear helmets and often rode in the back of pickup trucks. We swam in muddy, leach infested ponds and threw fire crackers at each other when we weren't getting shot with bb guns. Kids these days are fat and sit around playing video all day. They could stand to sweat a little...

Collective punishment just pits the kids against each other as well as authority. It's a technique used to break the will of dissenters by social out-casting.

Has no place in the discipline of children.

Also to function under communism as well as this is collectivist attitude towards crime and punishment where one person does something bad the whole group is punished. It was done in the Soviet Union where they would kill the whole village if one person pissed off the authorities.

I think kids need to toughen up.

This "child abuse" talk for 5 minutes in the sun is retarded.

No, absolutely not okay. I work in a school setting and this teacher abused her power by making the students uncomfortable. She or he sounds like they lack the ability to discipline a class without fear or anger, which means he/ she is not fit to educate your child.
I wish more parents would stand up to shitty teachers and policies. I spoke out in a meeting yesterday after parents asked if their deaf child could have a mask excusal. I said yes, based on their diagnosis, and they should ask for it, and an administration official said they could not. Those parents should have said well I want it and they did not. Fight for your children!!! These people are not smart.

I definitely didn't say child abuse. I presented the facts as neutral and well as I could, but they were stated by a 7 year old. Who doesn't lie and tells us about the day every day. After repeated questions, the story has not changed, and as this was dozens, maybe a hundred or more children, I believe we aren't the only ones hearing these heart wrenching facts about young children enduring extreme punishment.

Midwest here, extreme heat, uv, few clouds, at least 50% humidity today. Trying to pin down as many facts as possible about this incident.
