I'm not smart by any means but, aren't they in the thermoshere? That's technically not space,

This particular mission is flying right at the boundary between the thermosphere and the exosphere. Technically the atmosphere even extends to the moon at times, that doesn't mean the moon is not in space. But it does mean he was right and you are nitpicking.
