User ID: 38487486 United States 09/15/2021 04:25 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Today will be the first attempt to launch the first fully private orbital spaceflight. Some are describing as the first all-civilian orbital spaceflight, but that's not really accurate. A number of spaceflights have involved an all-civilian crew (particularly if we don't count previous military experience since Chris Sembroski is a veteran himself), but this flight is unique as it is the first time a crewed vehicle has launched to orbit with a private, commercial crew trained by a private company, riding a privately owned vehicle. This achievement will be an order of magnitude more difficult than the sub-orbital hops of Virgin Galactic or Blue Origin. Those were short flights straight up and back down, this flight will attain orbital velocity and stay in space for days. Quoting: Astromut The target orbit altitude is 575 km, higher than ISS and higher than the current altitude of Hubble. From there, the crew will observe the earth through the largest single window ever launched into orbit, a large bubble shaped cupola which is replacing the Dragon capsule's docking adapter for this mission. They will stay in orbit for 3 days before splashing down off the coast of Florida. Jared Isaacman, who is commanding and paying for this mission, is also attempting to use it to raise $200 million in donations to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Launch time is 8:02 pm eastern, the webcast will go live starting in about 30 minutes: LOVE IT! Will see what advantage Musk has - |
