The decision to shut down public transport has been slammed by a number of Melburnians, with many suggesting the protesters will likely find ways to skirt around the shutdown.


“They will just head in earlier or later! Crikey, who is in charge of this state?!” Dr Ranjit Rao, a surgeon and urologist from Melbourne, wrote on Twitter.


Others said the decision to shut down public transport was a step too far.


“Whether you are pro or not people demonstrating, this is still an extraordinary move by a democratic govt,” one wrote.


“So public transport in Melbourne is going to be suspended for 6hrs on Saturday to prevent protesters getting to the CBD – how did our country get to this?” one asked.


“How many essential workers rely on this public transport?” another asked.

Violence erupts at anti-lockdown protests as public clash with police

Police have begun arresting anti-lockdown protesters after a tense a standoff in inner Melbourne on Saturday.

Police flanked hundreds of protesters in Burnley St Richmond about 12.30pm after a crowd gathered outside the town hall on Bridge Rd.

The group sat down on the road after being surrounded by officers with batons and pepper spray drawn.

One officer could be seen spraying warning shots of pepper spray at the crowd.

Demonstrators moved back toward Bridge Rd through side streets where some were arrested.

In a live video streamed to Facebook, police could be seen pinning a handful of protesters to the ground.

Police taken to hospital with broken bones after anti-lockdown protest


Six police officers were taken to hospital with serious injuries, including broken bones, after they violently clashed with hundreds of anti-lockdown protesters in Melbourne.

Commander Mark Galliott said police were confronted by “angry and aggressive young males”, with many throwing bottles, stones and other objects at officers.

“What we saw today was a group of protesters that came together not to protest freedoms, but simply to take on and have a fight with the police,” he told reporters on Saturday.


The violence resulted in 235 people being arrested, with 193 of them linked to breaching the chief health officer’s directions.

Other alleged offences included assaulting police and riotous behaviour, as well as weapons and drug charges.

In total, 10 police officers were injured, with six taken to hospital and three of them still being treated.

Their injuries included torn muscles, a broken elbow, a broken nose and a broken finger.
