Why Moderna, Pfizer, and Other Vaccine Stocks Dropped Today
Booster shot revenue could be at risk.Shares of COVID-19 vaccine makers fell on Monday after a scientific review concluded that the general population does not require booster shots.
By the close of trading, shares of Moderna (NASDAQ:MRNA), BioNTech (NASDAQ:BNTX), Novavax (NASDAQ:NVAX), and Pfizer (NYSE:PFE) were down 6.6%, 6.3%, 3.5%, and 2.2%, respectively.
In an article published in the peer-reviewed medical journal The Lancet, a group of respected scientists from around the world said that existing COVID-19 vaccines remain "protective against severe disease from all the main viral variants." ~O~ [ link to www.barrons.com (secure)] In afternoon trading, Moderna (MRNA) and BioNTech stock (BNTX) had both dropped 6.3%, while Novavax (NVAX) has declined 3.8%. Pfizer (PFE), BioNTech’s partner, had slipped 3.7%. The S&P 500 was up 0.1%.
The Lancet article was a review of data from clinical trials, as well as efficacy in the real world. The authors, who included the FDA’s Marion Gruber and Philip Krause, argue that there is no evidence that the vaccines lose their ability to protect against “severe disease, even when there appear to be declines over time in vaccine efficacy against symptomatic disease.”
The debate over whether to use booster shots in the U.S. is ongoing, even as Israel begins to discuss the possibility of a fourth shot. Continued vaccinations would produce longer-term revenue streams for vaccine makers.Daozen appears to be mentally impaired, but harmless.
