Talking w/ vulcanologist about fissure eruptions

*rift opens in ground, lava erupts --some energetically

*he says volcanos can be very explosive in Canary Islands. This one is not so explosive--kind of medium.

*there are multiple points of rupture

*there will be a new "skyline" after this eruption, new little volcanos formed

*could all consolidate to one larger eruption point

*we have to wait and see how it will behave, its behavior could change on a dime (gulp)

*All the factors like how much it can cover, how long it will go still being determined

*changes of wind are important, these gases are VERY dangerous and authorities need to be extremely attentive to this to protect people

A rainy +8.1C evening from Moscow. Couldn't find the mega Covid thread so posting my symptoms here. I'd appreciate if folks pointed it my way please. I have +38.1C fever, headache, muscles aches and soreness, some chest discomfort, a stuffed nose with plenty of wet mucus. Haven't slept for two days soon. Grabbing some Zinc+D+C+Quercetin for that. This is almost identical clinical picture so far as what I had a year back and the doctors called Corona.

Now back to your regular volcano DooM scheduling.

I had Covid the first strain. A super vicious burning in the throat. I controlled that with super hot licorice tea, got into the shower with water as hot as you can stand, open your mouth towards the steam. I even put the hair drier pointing at my throat.

I am an asthmatic, so pumping meds into my throat was vital.

I also took brand name Robitussin. It is a decongestant.

And opened my nostrils even if not needed with Afrin, a nasal decongestant.

I have 4 video links up and working - the Spanish TV (#2) is doing other news too but mostly live from LaPalma

Note posts above ... an EXPLOSIVE EVENT will only come AFTER the vents have opened up and the ground water starts to super heat and MORE magma can start to work it's way upwards. 2 days to 2 weeks is a good time frame to look for that dynamic to start to show itself (though Tambora is reported to have rumbled for about a month before it blew itself to smitherines in the largest volcanic explosion in the last 2000 years leading to the "Year Without A Summer")

Time to go get a few supplies in case things get dicey here in mid US,
(water purification bag system, water containers, more keroscene for winter heat - yep refineries and thus gasoline and keroscene would be hard to get)

He who panics first ... panics BEST!!
 Quoting: Midwest Skeptic

WHY WOULD IT GET DICEY IN THE MID USA
 Quoting: ttown

Supply Chain COLLAPSE!

Didn't anybody learn anything from the Supply Chain Collapse early in the Covid Crisis?

(not even counting both an influx of disaster refugees AND the need for people here to go there to rescue and try to provide temporary help to the displaced - I highly doubt you have ever worked in a disaster recovery group, say after a major hurricane situation)

Some things like gasoline and petrochemicals needed for virtually everything, including fertilizer for farmers, would suddenly be in a very very short supply if the refineries along the gulf, as well as the offshore oil and natural gas out of the Gulf, were shut down long term because of damage. (take a drive along the Houston Ship Canal ONCE to get a flavor of how much of our refining capacity is down in the Texas /LA area)

For those in the Southeast up through Maryland FORGET about getting gasoline ... the Colonial Pipeline, and it's ONE competitor pipeline, would NOT HAVE any gasoline to ship even if the two pipeline remained intact. As for bringing gasoline into Florida by barge, or NJ/NY and Mass, forget that supply chain working for at least months if not years.

I have a question.
If it did decide to 'blow it's top'..
and created the landslide into the ocean,
and the wave reached the US...
How far inland would the wave travel??

 Quoting: Grey Eagle

I've seen crazy demos and simulations where they show
the landslide and then this huge GROWING tidal wave
that wipes out the East Coast.

How the hell does it get bigger and bigger? BS.

Put water in a bathtub.
Drop a small stone in one end.
Result:
Small ripple if any on other side of tub

Dropping a bowling ball, of course is a different matter.

Look at the size of La Palma compared to the Atlantic
Ocean with the vastness, depth,
and roughness of the underwater surface.

I can throw the biggest rock I can lift off the dock
at the lake. The decreasing wave/ripple won't even reach
the other shore. It dissipates over the vastness.

Now, I'm no rockologist, or waveologist, nor even a
bath tubologist.

Hell, I didn't even stay in a Holiday Inn last night.

I'm just looking at the scale of things here.

I'm no bathtub-ologist either, but if memory serves my intuition is that your bathtub is of uniform depth. You know how waves normally get larger as they reach shore? That's because the depth decreases.

The wave across the ocean would be small or hardly visible probably, as the ocean is deep. But as it approaches shore all that energy gets squeezed to shallower and shallower as the wave grows and grows.
 Quoting: ArmouredKitten

I hear you. Still thinking, though...
Since I'm also not a concentric circleologist, I don't know for sure...
But it seems to me that if you start with the landslide
energy into the water, say 5 mile effective wave force X,

As the wave force travels and expands in an ever larger
circle, like growing ripples from a rock in the lake,

The force value, X, is spread out over an ever enlarging
circle of force, being x-1/y, or to say another way:
for every mile out, the force is stretched 100 miles
farther, being 100x weaker wave force, as an example.
And not circling back...tounge

TVE: Mass evacuations not yet planned but prepare

Pevolca points out that it is not necessary to begin evacuating risk areas, although those who inhabit them must inquire through their respective municipalities about the evacuation routes and the established meeting points. He asks for collaboration with the security forces in the event of an evacuation, closing all exterior windows and doors, lowering the blinds and shutting off the water, gas and electricity supplies. Please also take with you the documentation and medicines for daily use, mobile phone and its charger, battery-operated radio, flashlight, clothes for about three days, and use the phones for what is "strictly necessary".

People felt the eruption coming

Neighbors of La Palma "felt a noise for days". Luis Alberto Rodríguez García is Head of Engineering Operations at the Gran Telescopio Canario, in the Roque de los Muchachos de La Palma. He tells us that for days he had sounded like a vibration in his ear. And what has happened to more people. Today he is at home watching the lava run down the hillside and across the roads.

I will explain how and why it gets bigger and bigger: as the wave approaches the shoreline, the continental shelf rises until the coastline appears. As the water gets more shallow, the incoming wave piles-up on itself.

That's how the wave gets bigger and bigger as it makes landfall.
