Record-breaking distributed denial of service attack targets Russia’s version of Google – Yandex.

Technical details tied to a record-breaking distributed-denial-of-service (DDoS) attack against Russian internet behemoth Yandex are surfacing as the digital dust settles. A massive botnet, dubbed Meris, is believed responsible, flooding Yandex with millions of HTTP requests for webpages at the same time.

According to Qrator, the Meris botnet delivered the largest attack against Yandex it has ever spotted (by traffic volume) – peaking at 21.8 million requests per second (RPS). By comparison, infrastructure and website security firm Cloudflare reported that the “largest ever” DDoS attack occurred on August 19, with 17.2 million RPS.

The Yandex attacks occurred between August 29 through September 5 – when the 21.8 million RPS attack occurred. Both are believed to be smaller precursor attacks by threat actors behind the Meris botnet, which have yet to utilize the enormous firepower.

Cyber attack: ANZ online access down for third day

Access to New Zealand's ANZ online banking service and app have gone down again this morning as the bank continues to come under fire from a cyber attack.

The Distributed Denial of Service (DDos) attack has hit a number of major businesses over the last week including banks - ANZ and Kiwibank, NZ Post, MetService and NZ Police causing intermittent access to their websites.

In a DDoS attack the hackers overwhelm a site with thousands or millions of bots trying to connect to it at once, rendering it inaccessible. There's no element of breaking into servers or stealing data.

One woman warned the continued outage would see the bank lose customers.

"Are you actually kidding? You guys are about to lose a whole bunch of customers. 3rd day in a row I've woken up to the app and the website crashed. Is this going to keep happening every day!? Why is this not fixed yet!? Are you going to pay our bills since we can't seem too? Absolutely fricken ridiculous."

KrebsOnSecurity Hit By Huge New IoT Botnet “Meris”

On Thursday evening, KrebsOnSecurity was the subject of a rather massive (and mercifully brief) distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack.

The assault came from “Meris” the same new botnet behind record-shattering attacks against Russian search giant Yandex this week and internet infrastructure firm Cloudflare earlier this summer.

Cloudflare recently wrote about its attack, which clocked in at 17.2 million bogus requests-per-second. To put that in perspective, Cloudflare serves over 25 million HTTP requests per second on average.

In its Aug. 19 writeup, Cloudflare neglected to assign a name to the botnet behind the attack. But on Thursday DDoS protection firm Qrator Labs identified the culprit — “Meris” — a new monster that first emerged at the end of June 2021.

Qrator says Meris has launched even bigger attacks since: A titanic and ongoing DDoS that hit Russian Internet search giant Yandex last week is estimated to have been launched by roughly 250,000 malware-infected devices globally, sending 21.8 million bogus requests-per-second.

No doubt US is behind this, since, unlike Google, Yandex actually still allows you to find real information.

Just keep the Internet alive, the rest can be burnt down.

It may backfire if they shut down the internet as I believe it is just as much the most powerful tool of control to put a spell on the masses. I can live without it. People may just go outside and speak to their neighbors and return to small communities and local production. -Just a thought.
