Re: Whole House Generator Experts - Question re: Natural Gas
You can get a duel fuel generator with a home hookup for about $800. Mine is connected to my propane tank then my home via a fat NEMA 14 plug. It’s wired to run 5 of my main circuits (kitchen lights/outlets, fridge, boiler, & bedroom lights/outlets) whenever I flip the switch and run the gen.

Re: Whole House Generator Experts - Question re: Natural Gas
I have the biggest Harbor Freight generator they sell. It was about 600 bucks. Before the HF haters, most generators have the same Chinese parts regardless of the name on it.

You can find a 3 fuel carburetor kit on Amazon for 30-40 bucks. It is a whole new carb that allows you to use either gasoline, propane or NG. It works great. You can change over while it is running.

I can run on my natural gas if I want, or I have the option of using any one of my 20lb propane tanks, or my 40lb tanks, or my 420lb tank. Or I can run on gas if I have to.

I set up the interlock on my power box and set up a backfeed inlet socket. Main breaker off, start gen, flip gen breaker and the whole house is powered. Works great, did it all myself for under 1000 bucks.

Doing the same here. Using a mechanical interlock on the main breaker. The generator breaker cannot be 'ON' unless the main breaker is 'OFF'.

I could have built the interlock plate with stuff I have lying around, but chose to buy the Square D factory interlock kit for liability reasons. $100 well spent.

Re: Whole House Generator Experts - Question re: Natural Gas
I am in the city of Los Angeles I can have 100 gal propane tank without any permits! I would venture that you could! may be several. As propane does not go bad!

Generator is a good investment. I live in and through 2 major EQ and we had gas after so it would of been great.
I now have a 7.5 kw gas gen that also can run on natural gas or propane with only connection to source and regulator adjustments! It looses apx 10-15% from gasoline to natural gas and another 15% ish to propane.
