I moved to San Francisco just three months after Jonestown when that city was still reeling from the double-whammy after the Moscone/Milk murders at City Hall and Jonestown both happened within three weeks of each other the previous November.

The local media was still spinning both stories like a kiddy's top since the new Mayor, Dianne Feinstein, had worked closely with all THREE dead men: Mayor George Moscone, Gay-rights Bigmouth/Supervisor Board member Harvey Milk and Jim Jones, the city's Svengali of the ghettos.

And Feinstein made the MOST of it every fucking chance she got! She suddenly had some SERIOUS national clout in the Democratic party and they rallied around the floppy-bow-wearing Bitch like moths to a blazing torch. I actually met her a few years later but that's another story~~~

Anyway, once I settled in the first place I visited wasn't touristy Fisherman's Wharf, but rather Jones' People's Temple headquarters out on Geary Boulevard.

It was a shabby-looking, beige stone former Synagogue on the south side of the street; it had three big arches above the steps complete with austere wrought iron and ominous-looking stained glass. Hanging above the sidewalk was a blue & white plastic-fronted flourescent sign that said, "PEOPLE'S TEMPLE". The plastic sign had a big-assed hole in it where some neighborhood kid -or angry adult- had lobbed a brick through it. So like Jones and those other 900 it was long-dead.

Until he headed down to the jungles, Jim Jones was a political BIG DICK around town and was Chairman of the SF Housing Authority which provided shelters/permits for the city's homeless and indigent, making him REALLY popular with both. So, that allowed him to pick/choose the best little worshipers for his cause... and bed. Both men & women if you catch my drift. But Jones didn't just go after the poor; he also sucked in some pretty well-off business types over in Oakland -they helped him run the Temple ops.

Ops like sending out his flock to hustle flowers and trinkets on the street to tourists while the older sheep cleaned the temple or tended to the the many bastard children running around naked. Jones was around too, getting high and dictating his sermons or fucking some new boy or girl that wandered in off the street. "Fresh meat, tonight!"

But before he went whole-hog with his Temple, Jones was a member of the City Hall insider's club that actually ran that city.

Oh, I could go on, and on, and on about Jim Jones. And the backstory is just as compelling as the one you all a saw on TV when Powers Boothe [as well as a really crappy Stuart Whitman] really nailed Jones to a cross. Boothe was thatclose to looking/sounding like the real asshole but in that movie, they only glossed over his political influence.

FYI: I have LOTS of stories from my SF days. Maybe sometime I'll tell you about the afternoon I took the bus out to Anton LaVey's "Black House" - the HQ of his Satanic Church. Unless you'd rather hear about Alcatraz, that is... I knew that town pretty fucking well!
