attracting and storing energy from lightning in large super-caps
I had this idea this morning as a thunderstorm is approaching.

Then decided to look it up to see if anyone else had this idea. Of course someone has.

Seems like an interesting way to collect and store natural electricity.

I guess most that have looked into it are saying there is not enough power to be worth going after.

article by Dr. Tom Hartsfield, a physicist working at Los Alamos. It was written in 2012.

No kidding, I was just wondering if it could be done and provide cheap power.

Re: attracting and storing energy from lightning in large super-caps
They are missing the fundamental obstacle with lighting: very high frequency electricity cannot be harnessed quite so easily. It does not follow conductors into batteries or capacitors. It does not seek to close a circuit, it seeks to discharge, finding the closest possible path to ground (or dissipation). Lightning not only exhibits extremely high frequency and voltage, both are erratic and unpredictable with our current knowledge. Capacitors are currently built to handle specific voltages. They tend to explode when their voltage specs aren't met, and violently. There are also several different types of lightning exhibiting different voltages, frequencies and wattages. A negative cloud-to-ground strike is considerably weaker than a positive cloud-to-ground strike that happens when a collapsing thunderstorm no longer has a low-altitude base from which to transmit leaders close to the ground.

This reeks of another wind turbine scam.

For sure you would need diodes to only charge the caps.
Not sure how to limit the voltage. Maybe some sort of big xener diodes or something. Not sure if Semiconductors can switch fast enough.

I just thought it was worth looking at as technology of components continue to progress.

The speed issue I think also relates to trying to protect the power grid from EMP. (unless using a Faraday cage of course).

Real time protection from peak voltages is needed for both I believe.

You must look at the Bermuda Triangle.

Grounding coordinates changed from ice age vortexes affecting the geological underwater shelf. The electromagnetic plate this sink forms at the surface in combination with atmospheric conditions at the ozone level creates a vortex of energy no different from hurricanes or tornados but which fractures gravity and allows for displacement of molecules.
