Doom of all dooms - I've harvested the last of my tomatoes (a gardening thread)
What happens if I have no tomato plants to bring indoors?

Is there an alternative? Like can I hang some red Christmas bulbs on my houseplants and call it good?

But wow oh wow, do I have some serious tomatoes. They're frozen, they're canned, made sauce, made chips, about a bazillion of them. Hooray for gardening!

Goodbye, halcyon days...

There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable.

There is another theory mentioned, which states that this has already happened.

Re: Doom of all dooms - I've harvested the last of my tomatoes (a gardening thread)
I planted more corn and bush beans. Beets are growing. Spinach is sprouting.

Having trouble getting my cabbage and lettuces started, for some reason. One cabbage did sprout, but a bird ate it. Other than that, they aren't germinating. Not sure if bad seeds or bad timing or black thumb. I'm new to this. Zone 7b if anyone has advice?

Same grow zone as you . I still have tomatoes coming and blooming , I love them . If you are sprouting I hope you are using an gardening almanac . If trying to sprout above ground crops , always plant on the increasing moon . I buy cabbage plants but just have a small plot . I have a million seeds from last year as I let them all go to flower . I think I will throw some out and see what they do. They like to be wet . I just have small plot around my cottage . I like mustard/turnip greens better than spinach so I will put some seeds out . Cheers to gardening , one of the greatest gifts.

I have heard of following the moon for planting. I didn't realize there was really something to it rather than it being one of those old wives' tales type of things. I will have to check this out. Increasing moon - got it! Thanks so much for this advice. I'm going to give this a go.

I've never eaten turnips before. Maybe I should grow some :)

Check the Ph of your soil, and water separately, and together, use distilled water for testing soil.

Either adjust the water, or amend the soil.

Take a selection of topsoil put-it in a jar 1/2 full, fill the jar with water, shake it vigorously, let it rest, examine the layering.

You want mostly loam.

You (Generally) want neutral PH, but some plants do best under specific PH conditions.

If you start kale and salad greens RIGHT NOW you may have greens all winter. Just water them as necessary, esp. through early fall heat waves. They need to reach a certain size before the first real cold snaps to be able to produce all winter. Premiere kale was my superstar last winter! And spinach, too. Always had fresh greens.

The moon is essential to planting. Not many realize the benefit of the 450-460nm wavelength, or blue light.

If you start your tomato plants, for example, under a 450nm blue light, your stalks will be thicker, stronger, and it will be a much heartier plant.

6.3 - 6.8ph. Same as medicinal plants. 6.5ish is perfect.

A healthy balance of bacteria/fungi will allow your tomatoes to achieve what they want. Bacteria like 7ish, and fungi prefer 6 or under. Put the plants in charge and YOU Win.

The lunar calendar is considered very important for crop growing, and also predicting the behavior of the season. My father-in-law lives by the lunar calendar. He would call today August 25 or something, because he literally live from it.

He also knows the changing seasons better than I do. When he says it's now spring. It's now spring. When it's fall, its fall.

The lunar calendar is more dynamic and flexible, making it a more accurate measure of the seasons and weather than our 'modern' calendar. But our calendar is simple and easy to learn.

We already have some rather strict laws on urban gardening. I believe it will eventually become illegal. either that or impossible due to expense. I have a couple of unoccupied bedrooms and some grow lights ready for this eventuality.
