Sick cat at Home. UPDATE
Well, I've got one really sick cat!

He was fine, or seemed fine a few days ago, and then yesterday, I guess I didn't notice he wasn't hanging out with us (or the other cats).

So last night, I went to find him - pull them all in from the lanai (screened in, none go outside, but they enjoy the fresh air from the lanai for the night), and it turns out he wasn't ON the lanai. He was sleeping under my bed. Not unusual, but would not come to me, and seemed very lethargic. Also, ALWAYS comes and cuddles up to me on my side of the bed once I go to sleep. Nothing last night. Was fine the night before.

Then, this morning, he's sleeping in hubby's bathroom, on the rug in front of the tub. Hubs said he slept there all night. Also unusual. He completely is shut down. Seems like too much effort to even pick up his head.

When I watch him walk, he seems to be in pain, but when I pet him, he doesn't yowl, or even moan....almost like it's too much effort. His eyes look clear, but he's definitely not interested in any activity or attention AT ALL.

I looked some stuff up, and it might be "cat flu." Yeah, there IS such a thing! I had one cat down with - something - last week. And the cat flu is very contagious (great! We have 6).

But just now, I was petting him, and ran my hand all the way down his body and it feels like a MASS in the middle of his torso....on the left side.

I HOPE it's just a blockage of some sort....rather than any alternative running through my head.

Anybody have any experience with cats and "the flu" or an obstruction?

Also, a few prayers wouldn't hurt, eh?

Thanks, friends.

Salmon is good for cats and dogs that are sick. Get some fresh fish, boil it and mash. Your cat, if he will eat, will get vital minerals and nutrients from the salmon. A lot of pet food is not very nutritious. Good luck. It’s so hard when your pets are ill . If the mass does not diminish, take to the vet, could be a tumor pressing on vital organs.
Do not be deceived, there is truth out there….

Cat flu is going around this area. Drops of Colloidal silver in their drinking water. Honey is good if you can get them to eat a little of it. We did a vaporizer with lavender to help clear the sinuses. The mas well that is above my paygrade. I would consult a Vet.

Don't know if he's peeing, haven't seen him go.

I DO know he's moving, cause he wasn't in the same place last night as this morning, and he wasn't in the same place from this morning when we left for church as when we returned. I'm hoping that means he's trying to get to the cat box or the food/water. He won't eat anything. I did try to give him some tuna (people tuna, which smells more like fish to me).

HE WILL GO TO THE VET in the morning.

I'm sorry to have to say I cannot afford to go to the emergency vet today.

This also.

If it is a urinary blockage, he needs catheterization IMMEDIATELY!

If it's something like a blocked intestine (possible since you feel a "mass") he needs fluids ASAP.

Really, you need to go. Cats can be very stoic, so when you do notice something, it's already been there for a while.

I did give him Colloidal silver this morning. I just dropped a little right into his mouth. He's so sick, he didn't even fight me or spit it up.

Now, a couple of days ago, all of a sudden, he shot out from the other room, jumped up to the window sill behind the TV and tried to throw up - like a furball. I freaked out a little (didn't want him to throw up on the window sill OR the table the tv is on), and he ran away and I didn't see him again. I just assumed he was "mad at me" for yelling at him.

That may have been when he was trying to expel the "whatever" that is now the mass. My suspicion is there is a blockage from eating something he shouldn't have. Could be a lizard/frog/sock....IDK.

THAT will be expen$ive surgery.....

Quoting: Deplorable NO MORE Michele B

Infectious Feline Anemia is running around big time in here in North Texas. It is transmitted by fles. We didn’t know that our indoor cat had fleas or could even get fleas. The vet said humans bring eggs, too small to see, inside on their shoes.

In addition to the antibiotic, she treated him with a single dose of an oral flea killer that wipes them out in 30 minutes, and put him on a prescription flea med you rub between his shoulders once every two months. She said the non-prescription stuff (Frontline?) that has worked for many years is no longer reliable because the flea populations in many areas have become immune.

It took three days of antibiotic before we saw definite improvement, a week before we saw great improvement, and now at two weeks, he is acting like he did before he got sick.

If your cat has a blockage that's nothing to mess with. The cat wont want to eat and will cause its blood sugar to rapidly drop and could result in a coma and death. I know money may be an issue but I would not wait til morning if he hasn't eaten.

Yep, go the vet immediately. I had a male cat who developed crystals in his urinary tract and he could not pee and I did not know. He had same symptoms, very lethargic and shut down. Vet said if I would not of brought him in his bladder would of eventually burst. They drained his bladder, gave me some meds for the crystals and home we went.

Well, we ended up going to the emergency vet, based on anecdotes read here.

He was crashing pretty bad, they said. Yes, bladder, prolly UTI, and backed up urine/kidneys blocked and may have shut down, due to not eating/drinking it IDK how long. I KNOW I saw him drinking not too long ago (but can't remember if it was day before yesterday or longer)....before you judge me, we have multiple cats, and like in a household with multiple children, they kind of have to fend for themselves as we cannot be on top of all 6 of them all the time. Just had another one who apparently had the flu thingy or a cold....I got him snapped out of it, but that was earlier in the week, so HE's the one I was watching closely.

They still don't know if he'll make it through the night.

Catheter, even heart meds as his heart and respiratory rate were affected (body temp fell).

Thousand$$ so far....

Thank you for listening and taking him in today. I know it's rough on the checkbook on the weekend, but it will work out somehow.

Sounds like he wouldn't have made it until tomorrow without veterinary intervention. Like I said, cats can be very stoic, and things can be way more advanced than you realize.

I was doing some chores this afternoon and thinking about him and you. I was worried. Thank you for the update.

I'll say a prayer for both of you.

Looks like it's going to be a rough night for the little guy, but he should be on some pain meds and hopefully get some good rest (along with the other treatment.)

He’s not at the point that I’d stress over the emergency vet. Waiting till tomorrow will be fine. Take him to his litter, food and water. Or put it in his area.

Also, clean the litter, the vet will ask if he’s using it. Only way to tell is fresh litter. Unless you have more cats.

Yeah, you gotta see if it's peeing.

I have an old cat that needs an IV daily for about 5 min bc his kidneys are not so great.

If they are not peeing though it can be an obstruction in the urinary tract. Usually this is more of an issue in older males.

But just now, I was petting him, and ran my hand all the way down his body and it feels like a MASS in the middle of his torso....on the left side.

I HOPE it's just a blockage of some sort....rather than any alternative running through my head.

Quoting: Deplorable NO MORE Michele B

Oh noes! Sounds like a urethra blockage! Please take him in so they can check it out. They act like they are in pain; go into the litter tray, but no peepee; not eating much. Some have had luck with giving them vinegar (watered down) and having a cat fountain to encourage drinking. They go down pretty quick......my son and his girl brought their sweet boy cat over because they could no longer afford 1500.00 every time he had an obstruction and their only other option was to do something to his weewee, which they did not want to do. My husband and I tried our best to keep him going and he passed away quietly after 4 days. I cried my heart out because I got my own cats (bengals). So take him in and see if that is what it is and if it is.....let them remove the crystals that form there and keep him on soft food for the rest of his days and a water fountain. I haven't read the other posts, so I hope to hear good news as I read. Take care

Re: Sick cat at Home. UPDATE
I just spent 1000 bucks on my 16 year old cat because he stopped eating. His liver is failing. He's supposed to get subcutaneous fluids but i couldn't manage the bag and needles so he's just going to have to to do whatever he does now. They made a follow up appointment but I'm cancelling it, He's eating a bit now and drinking water. It's a matter of time now, he's old and dying,

You decide now to spend the cash or it's useless, it's a cat, millions of them suffer every year. I also have to adopt out four others as I can't take care of them much longer, or myself.

The average life expectancy of a domestic cats is 16 years. That is the age of my cat. Beyond that you are throwing money at a pet that could save hundreds of other cats lives. I won't go back unless he's in pain to get him pain meds. He's old and dying, these vets will keep squeezing every last dime out of you on a pet that has weeks or even days, they are just as evil as the doctors. Then you have to pay more to have them put down something I'm not sure I can do.

You spend the money early and right away or just don't spend it. If you wait till the animal is very sick you may as well just let him pass on, not tourture the poor thing. I took my cat to a vet the instant I noticed something wrong. She found what's wrong and gave me the diagnosis, special food for liver compromised cats and fluids I can't give him, and he's old. Other than that I can't do much for him, he sits next to me all day in our chair together. I'll miss him.
