Jupiter in Opposition, Today 08/20/2021. The Biggest and Brightest it will be this year.
The mighty Jupiter, the largest of the planets will be directly opposite the sun from earth today, 08/20/2021.

It will rise in the ESE at 8pm EDT in the constellation Capricornus and set 7am EDT.

It will be at it's highest point in the sky at 1:35am EDT (where I live on the FL gulf coast), at 40 degrees above the horizon due south.

Even with a pair of binoculars, you should be able to see a marble sized object with it's 4 major moons.

So tonight, if you have a clear sky, take a break from the doom and check it out.

The rise of Jupiter will immediately follow Saturn and the moon.

Jupiter will be competing with a near full moon but that will not diminish it's apparent size.

The three will be within 25 degrees of field of view.

Looking south around 1:30 am EDT, this is the position of Jupiter, Saturn, moon.

If you have a decent telescope, Neptune and Pluto are also in view.

Are we SURE Jupiter is a planet? I have my doubts. I say bring back Pluto then recategorize Jupiter as the second Sun-star.

If Jupiter was bigger, it could have been a star. Binary star systems are all over observable sky.

50,000 years ago, Jupiter was a much bigger deal for humans in our system than it is now.

Looking forward to it. Just wish I had my newly ordered Astro camera here. Unfortunately it is close to full moon.

Cool thread. Gulf coast here also.

I have a great view most of the time. Not a lot of light pollution in my area, although the Glows of the surrounding cities play their part.

Thanks for sharing.

My pleasure.

I'm 30 miles N. of Tampa. Light pollution is bad here. Can't see anything past mag 5.

Jupiter is so bright, the moon is totally irrelevant factor for photography. Looks like you need to do some reading before you can actually use that astro-camera.
