Eternal Jobs

Let us take Kabul, London or Phnom Penh and try a thought experiment.

What jobs are necessary in every city? What jobs can be provided very quickly, with minimal training or infrastructure?

Pay 2-3 Times Minimum Wage

These jobs should be well paid and prestigious, if possible. Hire a good design team to build a good website, and give stylish Caps and T-Shirts for workers. 2-3 times the local MacDonalds/711 wage. Funds can be disbursed via Patreon.

An overseer can be paid for every 20 to 30 people, to make sure they are hitting their targets. Oversight can take place online, or face-to-face. Furthermore, workers can be encouraged to post before and after videos of their work. Oversight should be fun, fast and friendly.

Trialling a Trash Cleanup

In summer 2020, I trialled a local park cleanup in Danshui. I paid someone 300TWD to cleanup a corner of the park for 45 minutes. He did a good job, and moved a lot of leaves, bottles and twigs into a corner. We then made a quick video of the result.

What Jobs Would Work In Nearly Any City?

I know in Taipei, many young people only have Food Panda or Retail Jobs, paid at 150TWD per hour, or less. I would pay closer to 400TWD per hour.

25 to 30 hours per week is a decent, human work-week.




List of Eternal Jobs

The following jobs can be done by almost anyone. Feel free to add to the list if you want.

- City street or beach cleanup.
- City beautification, using flowers, paint or posters.
- Fruit Tree-planting.

Focusing on those three aspects would improve any local area in weeks, or even days. Streets would be cleaner, beaches more clean. Flowers and murals would appear in grey streets. Fruit trees could be planted in abandoned or under-utilized spaces.
