As an aircraft mechanic, many aircraft with the landing gear retracted there is very little room in the wheel well. In many cases they would have been squished.

In other words, they were Quislings.

Just saw a video with about 20 of them sitting on the door of the landing gear as an Air Force plane was taking off.
