Quoting: TimeIsShort 79148274 Having a couple baofeng handheld HTs in the box with the stock rubber ducky antennas that arent programmed for repeaters or anything local and think you are prepped with comms.... not happening. Get prepped now, these things will be scarce soon and they are already targeting hams for potential conspiracy theory terrorists. Have your gear in place now! Great idea, can someone please dumb this down for me? Thanks in advance |

Great idea, can someone please dumb this down for me? Thanks in advance Ill try. If you are familiar with AM radio, you can find shortwave receive only radios that you can listen to shortwave (HF / high frequency) transmissions which can be (depending on time of day and frequency) long distance (DX) transmissions. Good for hearing things from far away. If you want to communicate locally, look into GMRS radios and VHF/UHF ham radio hand held or mobile units. Find a ham radio club in your local area and they will help you. |

Yes, I'm finding tons of info/help online. It's great! I feel a little silly that I didn't start this sooner. |

Quoting: Viktor Vaughn Not sure what the problem is... All antennas have different properties for different freqs. Some will crossover or even give greater transmission or reception props. An antennae tuner is a nice piece of kit. Learn some antenna theory and make your own to fit what you got! |

They can auto load channels/freq based on the area that you're in. That with the Tecsun should provide a fair amount of listening. |

Well depending on what are using and the situation maybe yes or now. Most ham radio units run off DC power so you can get batteries (and even solar panels w/ charge controllers) you can keep topped off to keep talking in the event of power outage. As long as its not an EMP that fries everything. You can also in mobile usage wire the radio to your cars battery so power out in house no issue. Just have redundancies in place, I would at least look into some backup batteries you can keep topped off. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 77768466 United States 08/14/2021 10:33 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Someone jammed the 40m ham band in Cuba a few weeks ago. Last weekend hams in the midwest were reporting widespread jamming. If on HF maybe consider that mod that allows you to transmit across the entire HF range I expect 2m would be completely jammed if tshtf. 70cm is a pretty wide band, I dunno. |
